Isn't that the job of the lawyer? Pretty much I would've said unprovoked murderous attack.

What about people who can't afford a good lawyer? Besides, lawyers aren't proof.
Hell, if we did what you suggested, everyone would claim it was self defence, which means that nothing has changed

No lawyers aren't proof, but wouldn't you rather have a good than a bad lawyer? For those who can't afford, I'm sure there must be some sort of subsidised legal service available. Local legal centre? I dunno these things, that's why I'm not a lawyer. Yes, and isn't the point of a lawyer not only to defend you, but to counteract and break down the other side's claims? Like you said, if everyone's claim was taken at face value, then there'd be no point for courts and lawyers.
