Freaky, I was just thinking to myself today about when his run would end. I wonder who will be next.

Terrible, just terrible.

I had no idea that only very few popes had actually survived their roles. Nearly the last 600 years worth of popes have died in the position. Imagine getting a job basically knowing that it was a death sentence.

what do you mean by a death sentence? They just get old and die, everyone does that.

or do you mean they were killed?

Hopefully this sets a precedent.

It's a farce for an institution such as the Catholic Church to have a system whereby the leadership only transitions through death. As if the Church needs any more problems as is.

Fair play to Pope Benedict for resigning; it's been long overdue.

Lol'ing at all the people who are concurrently saying that the next pope should be black/Latino but should also be progressive. Because you know, the African Catholics are really known for their tolerance of gays, women and condoms.

Yeah, you have to be thick as mince to actually think there will be any shifts on the Church's stance on social issues.

It's blatantly going to be an appointment based around PR (which in itself isn't too bad considering).

How do you feel about the British Monarchy?

The Monarchy aren't an institution as far as I'm concerned.

The role is pretty much symbolic now so they can do as they please.

I don't get the hubub about it.

The Catholic Church will never change while the upper echelons stay the same-the new Pope will probably be another old figurehead.

Good on the Pope for abdicating and not waiting for death like most Popes. If you're no longer suitable for a job, you move on.

Really doubt a new Pope will have much change on the Church at all, although maybe they can choose someone with some more longevity in them (i.e a non 80 yr old).

Wow, tarring all Africans and Latinos with the same brush, what's the word for that again?
Firstly, i didn't say all Africans or all Latinos, I only specifically mentioned African Catholics. Given the context it was also patently clear that I was referring to the church leadership there, not every single African catholic. On top of that I didn't say they were all misogynostic homophobes, I merely made the point that its well known that in all the Christian religions the African and Latino leadership tends to be very conservative, which is why they are becoming strongholds of the churches.
Indeed both of the current African papabile have less than desirable views on homosexuality and one of them doesn't believe condoms are an effective use of money. Now I know those views are common within the church so I don't think they should be singled out for that per se but its hardly progressive now is it?

Wow, calls for a black pope. Nothing European is sacred any more.
