Channel 7 this morning had Cnn on reporting that the pope had recieved last rights.

"An Italian news agency is reporting that Pope John Paul II’s health condition has worsened:

The Vatican did not immediately comment on the report, which said doctors had to intervene because of what was described as a "worrying" drop in the pope’s blood pressure, but a spokesman later said the Pope has a high fever because of a urinary tract infection.

The Pope is reportedly being given antibiotics for the infection.

CNN quoted an unnamed Vatican official who described the situation as serious and said the Pope had received the last rights or the sacrament of the sick, which is not necessarily an indication that John Paul is in any immediate danger of dying.

An Australian newspaper says that Vatican sources are less optimistic:

"We are on stand-by for anything," one priest who works in an important Vatican department said.

"Hardly anyone thinks the situation will improve but everyone is hoping for a miracle," he said.

"I know the Pope is very disappointed with the progress of his rehabilitation and would like it to be much faster," said another source, a Vatican monsignor.

"This is a new phase in this papacy," the source said, adding the Pope would most likely have to face what looks set to be "a permanent state of precarious health".

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: the Holy Father is tough as nails. Don’t write him off just yet. "

If they have read him his Last Rites, then it is likely he will die soon, as they are not generally given unless the person is about to die, as they are the last of the 7 Holy Sacraments

no they're not, they're given whenever someone is in a serious state of healh, so that if something should happen then they're in a state of grace if they meet their maker. It doesnt mean he's going to die, soon, although he might. It's like a precautionary thing.
He was given them before in like 81 after the assination attempt as well.

It is unknown atm, the Cardinals meet when it is time to call on the next pope, and they vote on who will become the next pope. It usually occurs after the previous pope has died

I hope he dies otherwise he is never going to fuck off and let someone else be the pope. He can't even talk anymore. The people need someone who can actually speak to them, and this guy can't, he is useless.

he actually wants to keep being the pope until he dies because that's what's been going on for around 700 years

lol, it's last rites

note: i'm not the 'pick-up-spelling-mistake-but-miss-the-point' type, but i found it amusing becoz of the double meaning involved :D

On a serious note, i have sympathy for him. i have a grandparent who is also very ill @ the mo and in the final stages. He'll probably die within a week or two.

Has there been any talk of who will replace him (the pope)?

oops sorry, disregard earlier question, didn't read that bit.

yeah that's a more sensitive idea, waiting until after he dies

the pope cant retire as it would invalidate the theory of papal infallability...its a job for life

and way to bag out a dying person who has actually done some good things for our society

*claps hands*

(and no, this is not meant to turn this into a religious discussion on the merits or perceived negatives of the Catholic Church.....Im talking about the other things he has done in his role as a major world/political leader)

i was listening to the news but didnt really get the whole story, but this priest was saying that they are not allowed to use "superhuman" means of making a person survive. and he said that a resporater is an example. he said the pope wont be treated to a resporater even if he needs it, becuase thats what he belives. i think thats right

By all means, list what this precious human being has done for humanity? I just finished reading an unbias account of what this man has and has not done, the latter seems to outweigh any of his other achievements.

When I find the article, I'll list why I think it's good he's finally going.

Not the most dignified and private way of exiting the planet though.

Did anyone catch the ABC News last night? They were all "Terri Schiavo got her feeding tube taken out, and in other news, the Pope got a feeding tube put in". dark humour there.

I'm sorry about your grandpa, Chookyn.

No they're not. They're completely different words with completely different meanings.

Right
n.
1. That which is just, morally good, legal, proper, or fitting.
2. Something that is due to a person or governmental body by law, tradition, or nature.

Rite
n.
1. The prescribed or customary form for conducting a religious or other solemn ceremony: the rite of baptism.
2. A ceremonial act or series of acts: fertility rites.
3. The liturgy or practice of a branch of the Christian church.

Me, I'm not a big fan of the pope. It's sad that he might be on his last legs though. I hope they're sensible and pick someone good and young to be the next pope. It's been sort of scary the last few years knowing the largest religious sect in the world is being lead by someone heading ever closer to senility.
