umm, this is going to sound really stupid, but what does the Pope actually do? All I see is him sitting in a window saying stuff.

He's the Head of the Catholic Church, so basically what he says goes. Individual dioceses/churches are pretty much bound to what he says, although some don't follow his rulings/teachings/whatever about thigns like women priests, gay priests etc. I'm not sure what else the job entails, but he's also in a pretty prominent position to speak about world issues and such. Whether that's a good thing or not is up for debate.

At the moment, I'm pretty sure that is all he does. But when he's not suffering heart/respiratory problems, he runs the Catholic church. He can make canonical law, and this particuar pope is very fond of canonising people/naming new saints.

So he is like...ummm...the prime minister of the catholic church?
And basically he picks the saints, says what goes for the church, and does speeches?

So, if I'm Uniting Church, who do I "follow"? (bwahaha, tell I've never been to Church!)

This isn't the first or the second time he's had the Last Rites
I thought it WAS the second time he'd had the last rites read to him...But yeah, it seems kinda hopeles - the heart attack pretty much sealed it, I think. He (I'm not sure if this is a Pope thing or a Catholic thing or what) has said that he doesn't want to use any "superhuman" means to keep himself alive (although he credits Mary for saving him after the assassination attempt - ain't that superhuman means?), so he won't be hooked up to life support or anything.'

EDIT: Yeah, Argonaut's right - Catholics are divided on the issue of ordaining women - some follow the Pope's stance, some don't.

all i can say is that wen he dies, which i think shall be rather soon, i hope they pick some1 who is at least "centre" rather than completley conservative, or at least choose a temporary pope i.e. one who will die within a few years. the church needs 2 start at least debating some issues if it has a chance of reaching more people

Did anyone catch the ABC News last night? They were all "Terri Schiavo got her feeding tube taken out, and in other news, the Pope got a feeding tube put in". dark humour there.

I'm sorry about your grandpa, Chookyn.
Tripple J's Today Today made a funny note about this.

No, absolutely not, we need a young Pope, we need to spread them out

And asking a POPE to debate issues that are clearly defined in the Bible is pretty stupid anyway. It's the Pope's job to interpret the Bible and teach accordingly, not to ignore the teachings of the Bible that are biased/unfair etc.

From catholicism.about.com
Anointing of the sick is a sacrament. A sacrament is an outward sign of God's love. This sacrament isn't just for people who are almost dead. However, it is for anyone who might be sick and facing death, old age, serious mental illness, people who are going to have a serious operation, and those who might find strength with the sacrament.

The Anointing of the Sick is also known as the Last Rites. In the Anointing of the Sick, we pray for the sick person to be healed in body and spirit if that healing will contribute to the salvation of their soul. If the sick person was not able to receive the sacrament of Penance, the forgiveness of sins is also granted. Finally, for those at the point of death, the Anointing of the Sick, along with Reconciliation and Eucharist prepares for their passage to eternal life.
