I heard on the radio that an American born terrorist threatened of an attack on Melbourne.

What do you reckon are the chances of such an attack actually happening:
a)In Melbourne?
b)Elsewhere in Australia, and if so, where?

Personally I don't see Melbourne as a great target unless it happens during a major event. Sydney, Brisbane or Canberra are the more likely targets. Brisbane because it's a holiday resort and Canberra because it is our capital. However, Sydney is probably the most at risk simply because most people from overseas believe it is Australia's capital.

Myself and some other strategic thinkers have conducted thought experiments as to where an attack would occur. My money would be on sydney, explosives, biological or chemical attack on the CBD.

No aeroplanes, no opera house or harbour bridge.

Alternatively trains, the harbour tunnel or the water.

Maximum strategic effect water, maximum psychological effect attack on CBD.

Thus a Sydney CBD attack is by far the most likely scenario.

SIO: I am not planning, funding, involved in, inciting or in anyway involved in a terrorist attack beyond predicting one.

Don't worry people, according to the government and mayor or Melbourne WE HAVE NOTHING TO FEAR. Nothing is being done to enhance the security because they don't believe we are in any sort of threat.

melbourne cup/afl grand final/commonwealth games. Are all extremely large targets with devastating possible casualties if attacked!
And if everyone thinks sydney is the only place in danger that makes it even easier for the terrorists!
yeah the commonwealth games are a big issue and the security isn't anything special..
sydney would be a more lucrative option for them

Security levels on the upcoming big events in Melbourne would be a major deterent.

The interesting target thus far ignore is the 'christian olympics' coming up in sydney - for which the pope will even be in attendence. Doubtless security will be mind-boggling but it still makes for a very attractive target.

As was said by a recent comedian, if terrorists attack the Sydney train system who's going to know, it's in such a state now that they'd probably be doing us a favour.

Very low, his accent just made it so unconvincing, the american accent has tat effect on me...if it was in a language which when in anger sounds harsh and frightening than yes.

I think Australia is definitely a target and it's only a matter of time until it happens. There are an infinite number of years ahead, it's likely to happen sometime.
