at our school you have to get a form:
on the form you have to write:
-Your Current Subjects (including the one your dropping)
-Have you units counted and checked by the Careers Adviser.
-Nominate if your going for a UAI
-Have it signed by Head of the Subject (your dropping), Youe subject teacher (of what you are dropping) then have it signed by the HEad of Senior School, then sign it yourself and it then gets submitted to the Head of Senior School or Principal.

Parents do not have to sign, but you have a discussion with the Head of Senior School & Careers Adviser about what you wish to do, and why you are dropping this subject.
what? even principal is part of such a process?

At my school, we have a generic 'Change of Subject' form for dropping, picking up or changing anything. I haven't actually seen it, but I believe it requires signing-off by the teacher, the head of school, the student and sometimes the parent. It's a very formal process.

(We also have official forms for obtaining extensions and the like, but that's off-topic...)

Yeah that's with us as well, a lot of the time the school will force students to drop from Adv to standard/General.

Our school got a new system this year (and we are the guinea pigs, yay)
We have this form where you fill out your Yr 11 subjects on one side, ur proposed Yr 12 on the other, and then there's a form on the back for individual subject changes, which has to be signed by the Head teacher and class teacher.
You then hand the form into the Deputy, who reviews it and decides whether to approve or not. If you're going down to 10 units you may require an interview with the Deputy and your parents.
Also you have to stay in your course for the first 3 (maybe 4, I don't remember) weeks (unless your picking up extension subjects and will be on too many units) just in case you decide not to drop or it gets disapproved

That's stupid - you should be able to drop immediately after your preliminary exam.

Yeah I had to consult my curriculum coordinator and english coordinator.
I was only allowed to drop because i was on 14 units and I was accelerating in 3 HSC units in the same year.

Otherwise I would've been stuck like you :p

From just reading everybody else's school policy you lot should be grateful. For us, if your have >12 units you can drop to the min of 12 units anytime with ease, but since we are doing HSC next term one would think we could drop to 10 units if we wanted to. But no, we must keep 12 units min until the start of 2009:angry:

At sefton, if you want to drop or pick-up a subject (extensions) or change subjects early in year 11, you must go to the career advisor and tell her why you want to make a subject change. She'll then give you a green slip. You have to take that greenslip to show your parents and they are required to write a letter granting you permission to enter/drop a course. After that you must go get the signatures of the head teachers of the subject/s involved. Finally you must take letter from parents and greenslip to the deputy principle who usually makes you feel very unwelcomed and will reluctantly make the subject change for you and give you a new timetable. Lol. (process usually takes a couple of days)

I don't know why we need parents' signatures for, seriously. It's our bloody life! My mum would be quite furious if she knows that I will drop Chemistry.

Because if the school let you drop without parental consent... parents will be uber rage at the school when they find out?

Then what if parents wouldn't make a signature?

I mean, my parents would be quite angry if I told them that I need their signatures to drop Chemistry...
