Hey guys, I'm curious as to what raw marks I'd need to get in the HSC to obtain an atar of 99+. I'm still reading over the technical arcana/guidance & counselling sections so I apologize if a similar question has been answered.

I ranked 1st/2nd for almost all of my subjects before the trials (SOR1 was <10 - my internal mark should be 44-46/50 now). Assuming I come 1st for everything (excluding SOR) after the trials, what would be the (approximate) bare minimum raw mark I'd need to get in the HSC?

I realize this might be a difficult question to answer so any speculation/estimate is welcome.

My subjects are:

Biology
Chemistry
Maths
Maths EXT1
Standard English
Studies of Religion 1

I'd say you would probably need a 94 and a 96 in extension 1 maths and 2u, as well as a 91-92 in chem. For these you need ~70/84, ~112/120, ~78/100. Good luck!

Jeez, that's a bit lower than I expected for chem... If you're right then you just made my day :)

I've got one last question... say I get the following raw marks, approximately what kind of atar would I be looking at?

Biology - 94
Chemistry - 92
Maths - 118/120
3U - 76/84
Standard - 95/105
SOR1 - 47/50

If you got those as raw marks, I'm quite sure you'd be looking at state ranks for both chemistry and biology, mid band 6's+ for maths and MX1,
low band 6 and SOR band 6. I'd expect 99.6+
Standard English is probably weighing you down, because it aligns poorly.

95/105 for Standard is a B6.

Yeah but standard still aligns poorly, and will definitely weigh her down in terms of reaching 99.95, as it caps off at about 93.
In saying that, is it possible to receive 99.95 whilst doing standard english? Or will YOU have to state rank standard english to get 99.95

It is possible to attain 99.95 with Standard English. However I don't -think- it has been achieved before, last year the top mark a student that did Standard was 99.90.

Yes, a standard student would most likely need a state rank for 99.95.

Here are some raw external marks,

Chemistry
Total Mark: 86/100
Total Weighted Mark: 86
Exam: 95
Rank: 25/10325

English Adv
Total Mark: 90.17/105
Total Weighted Mark: 95
Exam: 96.2
Rank: 120/27127

Mathematics Ext 1
Total mark: 74/84
Total Weighted Mark: 74
Exam: 96.6
Rank: 232/9114

Mathematics Ext 2
Total mark: 81/120
Total Weighted: 81
Exam: 92
Rank: 258/3467

Physics
Total mark: 83/100
Total Weighted: 83
Exam: 93.2
Rank: 64/9356

Total mark: this mark is the sum of weighted marks
total weighted mark: this is the total mark after optional question scaling has been applied
Exam: final aligned external mark

Good luck 2011ers!

(oh and just taking the external marks alone you would be looking at an ATAR of 99.90 according to matrix lol)
(and i didn't go to a high ranked school so anythings possible!)
Have a look.

btw just cause you may be getting those kind of marks at school does not necessarily mean you can achieve the same in the hsc. Chem, for example, is marked really hard. And MX2 Q6,7,8 are really quite difficult. Just putting it out there

yeh, this, 92/100 in chem is probably top 5 in the state

Confirmed retard.
Even if it aligns poorly it doesn't align down. If you get 100% they aren't going to make it 90. It will stay at 100 all below that go up, but decreasingly as you get higher.
My friend in Standard fucking destroyed everyone and got 95% for English (44/45 + 57/60) and HSC markers marked some of it. So I don't think he'll get much less for this if he does get less and I'm thinking our school will get 2-3 B6s for English standard this year because 2 years ago we got a guy come 2nd in state and he didn't do this well. So I think you need to stfu about standard being so bad and talk to me when we get the HSC back.

To your comment that it caps off at 93 - you are retarded. 2nd in state in 2009 was 94. Your argument is invalid.

There's no doubt they will need a state ranking in English to get 99.95 but it is possible.

Look, standard is a very dangerous subject because of its horrendous aligning. Yes some people do well in it but it is very rare (around 5% get higher than band 5). If your aim is 99+ (even if your aim is 95+), then standard is not the subject you want to be doing.
