I can picture what will happen.

People will get superfast broadband with filter. As the filter grows larger the response time grows longer. People will complain to others about how slow their Internet is. Advice will be "opt-out of the filter and she'll be apples!"

We're back at square one with a heavily regulated Internet.

Web porn software filter takes biggest hit

THE Rudd Government has branded as a failure the $85 million software filter scheme to protect young Australians from online pornography and will review its future.

Federal Communications Minister Stephen Conroy is assessing the NetAlert program, which will come under scrutiny at the Senate estimates hearings tomorrow.

The filter scheme was a central feature of the Howard Government's $189 million NetAlert program launched last August to address the perceived threat of online sexual predators and unsavoury content to young internet users. A multimillion dollar advertising blitz followed, including a booklet delivered to every household across the nation.

It was expected 2.5 million households would take up the free porn-blocking filters within 12 months but only 144,088 filter products have been downloaded or ordered on CD-ROM since August last year.

The Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy has estimated about 29,000 of these accessed filter products were still being used - less than 2 per cent of the set target.

"The program has clearly failed, despite over $15 million being spent in advertising to support it," Mr Conroy said.

"Labor has always said that PC filtering is not a stand-alone solution to protecting children from online dangers. The Government has a comprehensive cyber-safety plan that includes the implementation of mandatory ISP-based filtering to deliver a filtered feed to all homes, schools and public internet points.

"Education for parents and teachers as well as children is a priority."

Mr Conroy said the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) would examine all aspects of ISP-level filtering, with a laboratory trial completed by the end of June 2008, followed by a pilot test in a real world environment.

Sixteen-year-old Tom Wood, aka "The Porn Cracker", who shot to national prominence when he showed the new NetAlert filters could be bypassed by any savvy teenager in a matter of minutes, said the scheme had been a waste of time and money.

"Although these are amongst the best PC-based filters available, it didn't take long for teens to work out how to bypass them," said the schoolboy with a passion for cyber-safety.

Opposition communications spokesman Bruce Billson said the Rudd Government was rushing to criticise the NetAlert program to set the scene for a "harebrained, half-baked policy dreamt up in the lead-up to an election".

"NetAlert is a program which is relatively new, as is the minister in his role, and I'm sure he would like a little more than six months or so before the public decide if he has been a failure or not," he said.

"Proper supervision should be front and centre of any efforts to protect children from inappropriate material on the internet; supported by additional tools such as content filters, not some mandatory and ill-conceived 'clean feed' measure by a government that believes only it has the authority to decide what's appropriate or inappropriate content for computer users."

But basically Conroy wants to decide that the Australian people's decision to choose uncesnored internet is wrong and that content filtering should be imposed at the ISP level.
As any good national leader should. Governments always know best.

THE federal Government will embark on the next step of its internet filtering strategy after initial trials proved successful, Communications Minister Stephen Conroy said.

Senator Conroy today released the findings of a recently concluded ISP-level internet filtering trial conducted in Tasmania by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) in a closed environment.

In the past, one of the main drawbacks of the technology has been web performance degradation but the government now says the trial showed that ISP-level filtering technology had significantly improved compared with technology used in a 2005 trial.

"It is very encouraging to see that the industry has made significant progress with ISP filtering products and we are heartened that many of the products tested are commercially available, with many of them already deployed overseas," Senator Conroy said in a statement.

ACMA said a range of filtering products were tested on network performance, effectiveness in identifying and blocking illegal and inappropriate content, and their customisation capabilities.

Senator Conroy said the tests proved that the web filtering technology could be expanded to a wider base.

"The next step is to test filter technologies in a real-world environment with a number of ISPs and internet users."

An expression of interest seeking participation in the live pilot will be announced shortly.

Bullshit. Fucking socialist government scumbags.
Socialism/communism is about freedom and openness, there is absolutely nothing socialist about this opt-out filter, this can only be branded as fascist.

Policy gets overturned constantly when a lot of people are unhappy with it, it is absolutely possible, if we get like maybe a 100,000 signatures or something to a petition.

Socialism is about introducing government regulation towards a greater ideal. In this instance you're putting a regulation on all ISPs (i.e. an interference with the market) to attempt to save children from the evils of pornography.

I'll also direct you to the part where socialism and authoritarian social policy invariably go hand in hand, because both ideologies are about the government having a greater degree of control over peoples lives.

You can't complain or do anything it's going full speed ahead. I called Conroy's office and wrote them like 40 emails + letters at the start of the year and got back one standard response form.

Bullshit. Fucking socialist government scumbags.
the only thing that might work is some sort of campaign to convince as many ordinary net users as possible to "opt out"

since if there's a big enough volume of opters out they won't look like pedophiles, lol

I am so sick of this 'censor the internet for the children' crap. PARENTS should be responsible for parenting their children, not internet providers. Young children should not be using the internet unsupervised and adults should not have their right to freedom taken away from them because other people can not appropialty supervise their kids.
Yeah... but parents usually dont.
Im going to be really unpopular and say i like the idea of it being censored.

Explain? It doesn't exist to enforce a moral agenda upon society, merely to prevent one person interfering with another's ability to live their life. There is some need for a police force/judiciary/etc, but not even close to that of a socialist or even mixed market system.
