Russia has gotten absolutely everything it could have wanted from this war. It's proven itself to be the big boy on the block, it's put down Georgia and all around made a pretty good job of establishing itself back into mainstream public attention. Bush and the like have been telling them to stop for almost a week and Russia ignored them, just as it could now.

America would never have risked any kind of war over this, never would have pursued military operations. Russia could have continued this war for another week, month or year if it wanted to. Now was just a good time to leave, as they got what they came for.
Russia wanted to control caspian sea pipeline running through Georgia , it failed. Thanks to Geroge Bush's warning.

And the War spreads to the Olympics.

GEORGIA'S bloody conflict spilled onto the sand of the beach volleyball court today when two Russian players said their opponents were fakes.
Georgian players Cristine Santanna and Andrezza Chagas - both born in Brazil - sent the Russians packing with a thrilling victory in three sets.

Santanna dedicated the "special victory" to the people of war-torn Georgia.

But straight after the match, angry Russians Natalia Uryadova and Alexandra Shiryaena declared they felt like they were playing Brazilians and taunted the winners for claiming to understand the war in Georgia.

"They don't even know who the Georgian President is, how can you call them Georgians? They are Brazilians and that is who we played against today," Shiryaeva said.

The bitterly disappointed player went further, blaming Georgia for starting a "stupid war".

Georgian coach Levan Akhvlediani then hit back, accusing the Russian girls of being "bad losers."

Russia could capture the entire pipeline in a day through their airborne forces if they felt the need. The Georgian war doesn't affect this at all, as that pipeline was always going to fall into Russia hands should push ever come to shove.

On the news this morning:

Georgia dude: "WE WILL NOT BOW TO THE KREMLIN"

<cue more bombs, despite 'ceasefire'>
The Georgians haven't even been respecting that ceasefire.

The problem Georgia has is that most of its military hardware is either ex-Soviet or Russian made. They have no western fighter jets (either European made or American made).

I think the United States will be providing military aid to Georgia very soon in the future. They wont have to pay a cent for lovely new fighter jets, tanks etc.

I support Georgia, at least they're moving toward a proper democracy unlike the guys north of them.
They have no jets to speak of. They only have nine at the beginning, regardless of their origins, nine was never going to affect the conflict. That, and the fact is the Russian MiG 29's and Suhkoi 27's are as good as anything the west have, bar the F-22 Raptor and potentially the Eurofighter. The Americans have also been selling weapons to the Georgians for the last five years, and there are almost 250 American soldiers in Georgia teaching the use of the equipment and generally training the Georgian army. Georgia's democracy is far, far away from pure, and this war will only radicalise their politics likely pushing them further away. I wouldn't be surprised if a sort of revanchism forms.

no, thanks to France.
Actually, thanks to no one. Russia decided to do this of their own accord.

Perhaps the United States will go to Russia and tell them "You can have South Ossetia if you vote in the UNSC to recognise the Republic of Kosovo".
If the US demand this Russia will just keep South Ossetia anyway. You seem to have the idea the US is prepared to do something beyond mere words, which they certainly aren't. And your statement about the EU looking elsewhere for energy is also off, if the EU could get it's oil and gas from someone else other than Russia, they would. But, they can't, with supply as low as it is and demand as high.

Notice how all those houses hit were on the edges of military bases and airports? The Russians aren't wasting million dollar smart bombs on Georgia when a couple thousand dollar conventional bomb will work. Georgia, on the other hand, rather indiscriminatly shelled Tishkinvalli, but you don't feel like commenting on that? Much easier to pick on the "commies".

And your next comment shows you as a buffoon. Russia has won this war. The Georgians were regrouping outside of their capital for the inevitable final attack when the Russians decided they'd gained enough.

But cowards russians are scared of America and didnt dare to capture the pipelines they wanted. Russians will never again rule Georgia thanks to American superiority. Just a word of Geroge Bush is more than enough to scare Russian off Georgian soil.

Saakashvili is a criminal and a puppet.

He started the war and now he's whining to NATO because his pathetic ass couldn't deal with the firepower.

He killed 2000 Ossetians and then blames Russia for starting the war.

Him and NATO are trying to start a war.

Sarajevo, I can't tell if you're baiting or if you genuinely believe such idiocy.

I can say this pretty clearly and with much confidence, America will only get involved in a shooting war with Russia if it really, really, oversteps it's bounds into American interests.

If Russia had wanted to annex Georgia, America would have made a stink about it and that's it. Nuclear war wouldn't be risked over Georgia. It's as simple as that. The Russian's left because they had given Georgia a hiding, proved it was big man on campus, and most importantly, has made NATO think twice. The odds of Georgia entering NATO in the next ten years went from low to zero. Similarly, every country on the Russian border not yet a member probably won't be accepted either, as NATO doesn't want to have to get involved with a conflict in Russia, which it would have to if say the Ukraine was a member and was attacked.

It just won't risk it. If anything, the West is acting scared of the Russians, because the Russians might just be crazy enough to escalate it. You hurt national pride enough and nationalism comes back to bite.

We're too isolated. We're not in the way of anything. There's no strategic benefit to hitting us.

Granted, we have some of the largest fuel and mineral reserves in the world, but there's really nothing any side would gain from targetting us that they couldn't gain from somebody closer.

Besides, we have an top of the line defence force while places like Russia and China are humming along on the scraps of the Cold War and what they can reverse engineer.

We're also fucking huge, so if the bombs DO drop, your best bet is to head to a fairly unpopulated dock/airport and take the first plane/boat to South America (neutral, sustainable, out of the line of fire). Chile or Uruguay would be good bets.

Give the Russians about ten years to complete their re-armament project and basically everything they'll have will be near par with the west, twice as affordable and four times easier to maintain. The amount of petro-dollars they're spending is amazing, and their stealth fighter is due into production around 2010, marking the last real gap between the US and Russia.

Actually NATO leaders already discussed speeding up Georgia's admission into NATO, so they can attack Russia without being seen as interfering between the two countries. Russia is scared shitless of NATO, thats why it complained, cried about NATO expansion eastwards, even begged George Bush to stop Missile Shiled installation.

It just won't risk it. If anything, the West is acting scared of the Russians, because the Russians might just be crazy enough to escalate it. You hurt national pride enough and nationalism comes back to bite.
The west is not scared of Russia for the slightest, western companies like BP are more than enough to take on Russian government. Russian national pride means nothing to the west and America will act if its interest are threatened by Russia, just like George Bush ordered Russia to stop its invasion of Georgia and Russia obeyed without question.

LOL, even state of Israel or Pakistan is stronger than Russia in terms of military capability. They are like 20 years behind the west in terms of technology. No wonder, only 3rd world poor trash countries use Russian made weapons.

You're an absolute idiot. The Moment NATO got any sort of upper hand in a conventional conflict in Russia you'd have nukes flying. No one is stupid enough to attack Russia in an actual proper invasion. You do it via proxies, like the Americans in Afghanistan in the 80's. And discussion won't lead to action. It's rattled enough NATO members to keep Georgia and the Ukraine out.

And Russia demanded that the US stop the missile shield, not begged. The Americans said no, and the Russians didn't do anything about it because they're not about to launch bomber raids on four Eastern European countries to prove themselves. The West is terrified of military action against Russia just because they don't know how far Russia needs to be pushed to prompt it to consider using nuclear weapons or other means, like their massive FAB with the power of a small nuke. Russia won this conflict and ended it on it's own terms, and no one elses.

As to the BP comment, that's amazingly stupid. I don't even know what you're logic behind that is.

EDIT:
The Su-27 and MiG 29's are the equals of the F-16 and F-18, and their new MiG will be the rough equal of the F-22. The T-90 is probably the par of a Challenger or Leopard 2, though a tad shy of the M1A1. The Ak 94 does exactly what it needs, the BMP and BMD series are all of rough equality with the West. Their old stuff is being replaced at a very fast rate. And also, Israel's military industry is one of the most capable in the world, as is it's army.

Firstly, all of the Eastern block used Russian weapons. The reason why Third and Second World nations used the Soviet equipment was because it was cheaper, easier to use and maintain, and adequate for their needs. Every other first world nation had their own military industry or agreement with a nation that did, as they weren't part of the Soviet sphere of influence. A choice of armaments twenty years a go was as much about politics as it was about the actual quality of the stuff, and it still is very much like it today.

Compared to now. Meanwhile give America 10 years and...

Anyway, give Russia 10 years and they'll likely be fully embracing democracy and free market economies and war will be the last thing on their mind.

But I can see how it might be almost romantic to try and re-live the 'Cold War' days and speculate about all the wars that won't happen in the next 10 years.
