In a desperate bid to get back on topic, I feel that School Marks are important but not as important as the external HSC mark, however if you do well in the HSC, but don't perform as well at school, your school mark will be scaled up accordingly, it however doesn't work the other way around (or so I'm told).

School Ranks are meaningless, its the individual's performance that counts, eg you could come in the top ranks in a low ranked school and get a UAI of 99.5+, or get in the low ranks, in a highly ranked school and get a UAI of 70. It all comes down to your own performance not the performance of the school as a whole.

lol, now that we're back on topic, i do see what you mean. You can rank low in school assessments but end up scoring better than your class in the hsc - and yes, it DOES pull your mark up (quite a bit too :p) I read somewhere (can't remember) that the BOS keeps your school rankings though, and whatever you score on the external exams will be scaled back to how you ranked internally - don't really see how this works, but it'd be great if someone could explain it

Yeah i feel that school marks are generally not important ather the ranks, in that if u place urself in the top ranks of your school it helps immensely. For example if i came third in my school for Chemistry, but in the final HSC i came 20th out of the people in my school who sat the test - then i would receive for my internal mark the mark of the guy who came third and my actual HSc exam mark averaged together. However confusing it may sound - basically to prevent massive screwup u need to do well internally, then in case u stuff up the actual paper hope that ur school as a whole has done well

Wow, that's rather confusing =/. I just thought they scaled your school marks according to how your school did in the HSC =x.

It was IPT :)cold: *shudder*) and yeah, i was actually surprised at the result. When i got my class rankings at the end of the year i guess it was kinda a shock back into reality and i decided to work a lot harder before the hsc. It payed off :p
well that explains it. ipt is simple, pure memory work. everyone (except a couple) in my ipt class are bludges and play the helicopter game all through a double. (teacher is a douche) all you need to do is cram in that subject. but it won't work in others.

Nah, it's your ranking that's important.

Like if you come second internally, you get the second highest HSC exam mark as your internal mark. If you come seventh internally, you'll get the seventh highest mark the people in your school got in the HSC exam as your internal mark. Your external mark is just what mark you got in the HSC exam - that's fixed.

By going to a good school, you just increase your chances of getting a higher internal mark.

Then what happens if your original internal mark is higher than the mark they intend to give you?

Damn, that's annoying - but yeah IPT was pure memory work - i can't afford to bludge any more subjects from now on

Quick question: where do you go to find out your school's rank? I'm pretty sure that mine's down the list.
Sorry 'bout going off topic again.

Seriously people, don't get agitated by someone saying that your school is shit. It is only shit if you admit that your school is shit. Even if my school was like 499th, as long as I don't perceive that as a shit rank, that's not a shit rank. It's up to individuals to make their own personal views and don't take it to your own hearts. And to those people who make false judgements against schools they never attended, experienced or witnessed: just don't do it. Because there are cases where you are extremely forunate to be in that course, not the the school that is actually luck to have you as its student.

I am extremely fortunate to attend my great school and as someone already mentioned, I would never swap this for any school even that school is JRAGHS or SGHS.

By the way, I still stay on topic. I think school assessments results are important. It determines basically 50% of your HSC result. As the OP mentioned, performing extremely one out of two will only get you to certain limit. Doing well in both, however, will get you to the 4th dimension of top state rank.
