Yep agreed! We should all be positive!! Please peoples! We all have to encourage everyone for the big moment in the lives when they enter the HSC! We all need to study!!

However the post 2 above me quoted, is half right. It is true! But I believe when someone reaches a certain point or something, where they learn something so important, i dont know, something just happens, then they will learn to study and cope with all the work. Someone needs to tell them, seriously the other day, my dad and his friend (his son, Peter - also my friend =)!, got a UAI between 90 and 95, and he was really proud - that was last year HSC so it was still UAI) and so yeah, they talked to me about your choice, study, university and all that stuff. The things they said got me thinking, and some things got me moved.

I don't know what im talking about, but Cecily, I believe you! I know you will study hard, and I'm so impressed with your high distinctions!! I'm so jealous !! I only get distinction, so bad compared to you!!

but anyways, hope you can get into 3 unit class, or seriously if you can't and you really want to, ever considered of changing schools just for the subject change?

But anyways thats crazy, your friends and all that will be gone, anyways

Good Luck!!

Simon - ;)

Well by law, they cannot stop you from doing any subject you want to but they can only highly recommend you from not doing the subject.

My friend told me this which her mum is an English teacher who generally takes year 11 and 12 and her step dad is a principal of a high school. So I'm 99% sure its true. :D

Thats why that girl called BOS and got in because they aren't supposed to stop you.

hey there. As santii stated the school cannot stop or disallow you from doing 3U Maths. They could tell you they don't have 'enough places' in the classes, but obviously this isnt a problem in your situation, and wouldnt be for any other student as schools will always make room for a talented student ;).

But they could get you to sign a form that says they did not recommend you for the subject, but you chose to do it anyway. This is so you won't blame them later in the future if you somehow end up failing or doing bad in the subject and ruining your HSC score...blah blah blah etc.

I was told this by the principal of the public high school that i will be moving to next year (from a catholic HS). I Have ended up getting into all the subjects I chose without having to sign it, before i have even given them school my SC reports  and the principals 'making' a place for me in the Legal Studies class :).

I'm just saying that if she continues her work ethic - slacking off - then there is no point in doing it. If you are at James Ruse, you should really be at the top of your game all the time, because you are pitted against the best in the state - so really, on the circumstances - I would've chucked her into 2u because she hasn't shown the work ethic in past to deserve a place there. Now she has to fight for one.

In the workplace, if you don't show the work ethic required - you don't get a job, or you don't keep it. Hopefully by this she's learned not to slack off.

But yes, what the other posters said before - you'll have to ring the BoS and tell them your school is being gay and not letting you in.

Woaha, Shadowdude, how come James Ruse students have to always be working hard, whereas the rest of the state slacks off? You can't really be suggesting that there are different rules for us just because we go to Ruse (yes, I do go to Ruse - hi Jim, hi Y - this is hash). And it's pretty hard to keep up with the competition. We could slack off a little bit, and still be working twice as hard as most of the state, but we may drop 40-50 places in maths just for the brief period we didn't put as much effort into our work.

I really think CecilyMare's slacking off in the past isn't such a big deal. The rest of us worked our butts off in years 7-10 and for what? None of it matters anymore. It makes a lot more sense to work when it matters. Of course that doesn't mean not do any work at all and fall completely behind in everything, but like, it doesn't really make sense to stress and do like 8 hours of work every holidays for a year 8 yearly that no one will care about in year 12.

But off course, Woodhouse doesn't see it that way, so goodluck persuading him ><. If it gives you any hope, I know of people who failed their 2u maths prelims in year 11, but managed to talk him into giving them a place in the 4u classes. So nothing's impossible! Goodluck :)

People at other schools could get an E in their math course result and still be able to take 3u. I don't see why that just because I'm at Ruse I can't be treated equally (yes I know cliche but it's still a need) like people at "normal" schools. And also like I said, I've been slacking off in ALL subjects so if we're going according to your standards of what I deserve right now and what I don't, I shouldn't be alllowed to participate in HSC at all. Logical.

I know Cecily, it isn't fair - however I think the school is basically saying, "You haven't shown the work ethic we think is required of our 3u students". Also, if you slacked off - you may have missed a few key concepts - like for example, I struggled with fractions and knowing when to multiply the denominator and get a simple a+b=c equation or when to cross-multiply and simplify.

The school is just taking a logical step, in my thinking, and you have to convince them (or force them, if need be) to get yourself a place.

I also think you're exaggerating about the E in maths - but yeah.

And nutcracker, it's because I like stereotypes =P

That being said, I suppose the two of you must therefore be Asian because you go to Ruse. So hello my fellow Asian people! (Australia is part of the Asian Football Confederation so whichever way you see it, all Australians are Asian - some may disagree with that).

I had 0 worth ethic from 7-10, but the thing is, it doesn't matter what work ethic you had in 7-10. After end of year 10, you would have labelled my a bottom 20% student, however as it stands today, I'm in the top 50. And I'm in 4U, after getting 67/110 in yearly for maths last year. Why would you work from 7-10. It makes 0 sense.

IN ADDITION 3U BASICALLY MEANS YOU DO WORK IN MATHS 2U MEANS YOU DONT. This is for James Ruse. Just tell him could you please put me on trial/probation and I will show you I deserve to be in 3U. It's a bonus if you are 7 and jump classes.

We weren't allowed in 3 unit unless we had done 5.3 and gotten an A10 or A9 in the end.
If you can't convince your teacher, then the only possible thing you can do is ring BOS.

I think it's pretty difficult for a person at Ruse to not get simple concepts like the ones you mentioned Shadowdude, by the time they get to year 11 lol. I mean, I've just been dropped down to 7 after doing appallingly in year 11 and even I get that stuff. The problem at Ruse is that they teach harder subjects earlier, unlike other schools - like circle geometry and harder trig - that's the stuff that CecilyMare may have missed out on learning fully, but seeing as they're subjects that most people learn only when they go into year 11, there's nothing saying that Cecily won't be able to get them then - at the same pace as the rest of the state. Instead of Ruse's crazy, accelerated pace.

Lol Shadowdude, I can certainly see you like stereotypes. Just be careful with them, because sometimes they offend people. :p

Haha, an Australian claiming to be Asian? Well, I never! xD I'm actually curry, which is still Asian but no one seems to think so anymore. But yeah, lol, hi fellow Asain

True, when we get tutor from outside, we basically learn a couple of years ahead of work. So there is no point at school trying so hard, so who doesn't slack off?

When I was in year 6, a year 6 class teacher (another class, not mine) told my brother then later he told me, that Mathematicians are lazy! Is that even true? I don't know! Some one tell me, who is a mathematician and is lazy ;)

But anyways, well if you guys are still arguing your point across, just shut up, we're trying to help Cecily get to 3Unit class! Just ring them =) :spin:

That's correct. According to the Head Teacher, the rule is if you fail, you can then be kicked from the course, but if you don't, then he can only recommend you drop it.

We weren't allowed in 3 unit unless we had done 5.3 and gotten an A10 or A9 in the end.

Every kid in JR including Cecily will have done 5.3 and gotten an A9 or A10 (yes even the bottom class, I know of ~5 kids/140 that got B8).

I did appallingly till year 11 and was in 7 at the start of the year, and I came top 50 in half yearly. As it stands I'm 35th in 4U and 50th in 3U, so all I'm saying is if you're prepared to dump most of your time in maths, you should be able to handle it fine. The first week or two might seem a bit overwhelming though (It definitely did for me), as after 2 weeks I had done more work than I did in all of Year 10, however I got used to it. I got the same feeling after starting 4U as well, but now that's stopped.

Thanks people

I was a lot worse than you, so you'll do fine. I can tell you my track record, and yours is probably much better than mine:

Year 9 Yearly: 29.5/72 (115/131)
Year 10 Half Yearly: 39/70 (108/140)
Year 10 Yearly: 67/110 (108/140)
Year 11 2U Half Yearly: 54/60 (49/168)
Year 11 3U Half Yearly: 50.5/60 (61/156)
Year 11 2U Yearly: 36/60 (108/168)
Year 11 3U Yearly: 47/60 (91/156)
Year 11 3U Term 4: 48/63 (50/156)
Year 11 4U Term 4: 53/60 (35/97)

So anything is possible, remember 5 marks is probably gonna be a LOT of ranks.

My tutor (a mathematician) said himself there lazy. Want an example instead of using multiple sign they use dot, or instead of the writing the sum of they use the bracket like sign.

wth HD in westpac
and b7 in SC? o_o
slacked off?
calling bos is probably the best option, if your teacher fails to succumb
although are you sure you'll cope with 3 unit?
