lets cut off toes for all i care and fix this mess. my cousin's a heroin turned methadone junkie who spent a month on ice and does pot recreationally. she started with pot. so you could say it's a gateway drug. we need to stop more people becoming like my cousin.
I don't agree that pot is a gateway drug. God, half my class smoked it but none of them would touch any other sort of drug. I think you've got to have the inclination to do hard drugs in the first place. Many people smoke pot because it's a light, recreational drug that's easy to obtain.

legalisation, but not decriminalisation, it needs to be regulated if legalised.

OK I'm going to have to disagree with you on the injecting rooms. Australia's quick introduction of injecting rooms and other harm minimization during the rise of the AIDS epidemic is almost exclusively responsible for us having a very low percentage of people with HIV when compared with the rest of the world. In countries where their is a strict No Tolerance policy, the epidemic is significantly higher!

Making heroin available over the counter.. I haven't formed an argument either way on this one except in cases of serious addicts. Why spend the money on jailing/convicting an addict, when for less you can help them? Treatment programs are a step forward for what is ultimately a health problem. It is obvious that telling them not to take heroin and threatening law intervention has not helped these people. But jail time isn't going to cure their disease.

It's like road safety. We have to accept there will be road crashes. Rather than putting all our eggs in one basket and enforcing sensible driving/road-safe cars etc, we encourage or enforce the use of seatbelts, driver hazard programs, bendable street signs and so on, so minimize the HARM of the crash.
I agree that it's helping keep AIDS at a minimum. If they go to injection rooms, theyre obviously not going to drop their needles elsewhere...BUT we're funding the habit for these people.
The reason I'm against providing the drugs for heroin addicts and such, is because there are people out there with specific medical conditions who can't afford their medicine. The government isn't handing them their $30,000 medication.
I read somewhere, parents had to raise $500,000 for the medication needed to keep their child alive.
We're allowing people to "safely" inject themselves with heroin, but we aren't allowing cancer patients, and others with terminal illnesses to have the self choice to die with dignity.

I find everything so skewed. It's like, we're helping those who we think can be helped, but those who can't we're putting aside.

haha no she's been prone to drugs since she was little, she's got full issues and stuff. drugs is just one of them. she got arrested for dealing pot when she was 13! i just think that it's possible her pot connections got her heroin connections. i mean, it's not like someone knocks on your door and goes "i have a feeling you want heroin, here's my number". she had to get the connection from somewhere.

Maybe. But that would come with bad luck. Out of the many, many pot dealers I know, I can't really think of any that would deal with heroin. Orange is a drug mecca, I doubt many of the hard drug dealers would waste their time with marijuana.

I'll agree there are some really screwed up situations when it comes to medical funding. But the fact is, it costs more to imprison the user than to treat him. The heroin/morphine itself shouldn't cost the government much because it is very cheap to make.

It does bring some philosophical questions though. Should everyone be contributing towards the $500,000 for the medication to save the child? Should it be an expectation? What about a homeless person whose lack of food will see him die in a year? We are moving to a society where we try to care for EVERYONE, but it is becoming an expectation and not a privilege. I'm just not sure what the answer is on this one. I'm not against social welfare, but at what cost do we put a life in a nation of ~20 million?
No, I agree completely. I didn't say we should fund the 500,000, but it was just an example.

But it's not just Australia. We're handing out millions of dollars to other countries. We're expected to hand out to everybody who can't make it themselves. I mean, what did they do in the times before welfare? Are we expected to go on forever like this?

You're right. I think we're becoming complacent. People feel as though it's our duty to help others. People no longer see it as a privilege, but as a right.

Hello, Hello. My names Terry and I'm a law abider
There's nothing I like more than getting fired up on beer
And when the weekends here I to exercise my right to get paralytic and fight
Good bloke fairly
But I get well leery when geezers look at me funny
Bounce 'em round like bunnies
I'm likely to cause mischief
Good clean grief you must believe and I ain't no thief.
Law abiding and all, all legal.
And who cares about my liver when it feels good
Wwhat you need is some real manhood.
Rasher Rasher Barney and Kasha putting peoples backs up.
Public disorder, I'll give you public disorder.
I down eight pints and run all over the place
Spit in the face of an officer
See if that bothers you cause I never broke a law in my life
Someday I'm gonna settle down with a wife
Come on lads lets have another fight

Eh hello. My names Tim and I'm a criminal,
In the eyes of society I need to be in jail
For the choice of herbs I inhale.
This ain't no wholesale operation
Just a few eighths and some Playstations my's vocation
I pose a threat to the nation
And down the station the police hold no patience
Let's talk space and time
I like to get deep sometimes and think about Einstein
And Carl Jung And old Kung Fu movies I like to see
Pass the hydrator please
Yeah I'm floating on thin air.
Going to Amsterdam in the New Year - top gear there
Cause I taker pride in my hobby
Home made bongs using my engineering degree
Dear Leaders, please legalise weed for these reasons.

Like I was saying to him.
I told him: "Top with me and you won't leave."
So I smacked him in the head and downed another Carling
Bada Bada Bing for the lad's night.
Mad fight, his face's a sad sight.
Vodka and Snake Bite.
Going on like a right geez, he's a twat,
Shouldn't have looked at me like that.
Anyway I'm an upstanding citizen
If a war came along I'd be on the front line with em.
Can't stand crime either them hooligans on heroin.
Drugs and criminals those thugs on the penny coloured will be the downfall of society
I've got all the anger pent up inside of me.

You know I don't see why I should be the criminal
How can something with no recorded fatalities be illegal
And how many deaths are there per year from alcohol
I just completed Gran Tourismo on the hardest setting
We pose no threat on my settee
Ooh the pizza's here will someone let him in please
"We didn't order chicken, Not a problem we'll pick it out
I doubt they meant to mess us about
After all we're all adults not louts."
As I was saying, we're friendly peaceful people
We're not the ones out there causing trouble.
We just sit in this hazy bubble with our quarters
Discussing how beautiful Gail Porter is.
MTV, BBC 2, Channel 4 is on until six in the morning.
Then at six in the morning the sun dawns and it's my bedtime.

Causing trouble, your stinking rabble
Boys saying I'm the lad who's spoiling it
You're on drugs it really bugs me when people try and tell me I'm a thug
Just for getting drunk
I like getting drunk
Cause I'm an upstanding citizen
If a war came along I'd be on the front line with em.

Now Terry you're repeating yourself
But that's okay drunk people can't help that.
A chemical reaction inside your brain causes you to forget what you're saying.

What. I know exactly what I'm saying
I'm perfectly sane
You stinking student lameo
Go get a job and stop robbing us of our taxes.

Err, well actually according to research
Government funding for further education pales in insignificance
When compared to how much they spend on repairing
Leery drunk people at the weekend
In casualty wards all over the land.

Why you cheeky little swine come here
I'm gonna batter you. Come here.

Yeah. You can't be out or at a party to enjoy A Grand Don't Come for Free because the lyrics are better than the actually music but I like listening to it when I'm home by myself and feeling contemplative. Did you get to see them at big day out? I missed them and was absolutely devastated! I heard they were really good.

As a past user of the stuff I will tell you that the stuff should not be legalised. It's effected my speech, my personality and my relationship with others. I have troubles forming sentences on occassion and have become more aggravated it. I used it everyday for the term of 1-2 yrs, as much as any1 in pain would use it and I would not recommend it.

With pot, alot of people dont bother going to dealers anymore anyway.

I had proper drug education, believe me... and i cbf getting into the reasons for getting into it in the 1st place, my point was that it can badly effect you... It is worse than alcohol and as a person experienced with the drug, i recommend that it should not get legalised. Relatives of friends have been diagnosed with schizophrenia because of it. It changes who you are. It is a very harsh drug and not one that can be taken lightly.

EDIT: BTW the last time i ever took the stuff was 2 and a half years ago, and it still effects me

I don't want to offend you but I just don't know whether to beleive you becuase i have never had bad experiences with the drug and haven't seen it have any bad effects on friends or relatives before... why is this so if it is supposedly so harsh?

You may choose to believe me or not... that's your opinion and by no means are you offending me. I am just stating my own experiences with the stuff and my own opinions about legalising it. I've seen peoples lives broken down by a drug that is seen to be as bad as alcohol... yes alcohol breaks peoples lives down, but I've never seen anything compared to wat pot can do to a persons life.
