Study both chemistry and medicine? (1 Viewer)

HEy people, i really really want to study medicine and i also really really want to study chemistry at uni. but there is one problem. i want to work as a doctor but i only want to do chemistry because i find it interesting!! is there a way where i can study both of them. i know that going to USYD is an option but 99.95 is crazy to obtain. and i also know that i can do chem first and then do GAMSAT, but i heard that the GAMSAT was really hard.

any suggestions or is any one out there doing this??

Combined degree of Med/Adv(Science)

At USYD, medicine is a post-graduate degree. Which means that even if you gain (guaranteed*) entrance after HSC based on your HSC results + UMAT + interview, you will have to do an undergraduate degree of your choice (in your case, it can be a science degree). Once you finish that degree, you will move on to do medicine.

*I'm sure that there will be additional criteria, such a maintaining a certain average/GPA in your undergrad degree. You'll have to double check this.

i am interested in chemistry, not the chemical side to med. i would do pharm. but the job prosepectives aren't good, and i would rather be a surgeon

yeah i could... but i want to make things explode in labs and do wicked experiments. can i do something like science part time after i have finished my MBBS degree? or even during my MBBS degree?

If what interests you is synthetic, organic & medicinal chemistry then you need to do B.Sci / B. Adv Sci, don't do pharmacy as you don't get in to the molecular and atomic details, it's all just drug - mechanism - disease(s) it treats.
Doing a double major in pharmacology and synthetic chemistry would give you an awesome skills set to base an honors project on as you could go all the way with synthesizing novel drugs to act on specific sub type receptors, really exciting stuff! (It's what I will be doing next year).

If your heart is set on medicine though, I'd still go with B. Advance Science for your undergraduate. You will probably need to do a fair amount of medical science based subjects to stand you in good grounds for post graduate medicine, however you could certainly do a chemistry minor over the course of that degree.

you dont get to do the wicked exploding stuff all the time. most of the time its going to be theory/calculations. if you want the explosions, buy chemicals off ebay or something and go for it.
i just dont understand y u want to be a surgeon, but at the same time want to blow things up. doesnt seem quite right...

LOL, it isn't that i want to make things explode, i just want to do more complex reactions that what we do at school.

I want to be a surgeon because i like to work with my hands and it really interests me how far humans progressed with surgical techniques. Also, i think that it is really amazing how a surgeon can impact the life of a patient so much that they thank the surgeon like 10 times during the post op checkup ( something i saw during work exp) and even if they don't thank the surgeon, the surgeon still knows that they have improved the wellbeing of that patient.

Last time my daughter had surgery, I thanked the (waiting forever for) surgeon once for finally doing the straightforward job he had to do and the nursing staff about 50 times as they had a wide spectrum of how that could perform their jobs and they chose the high end. Each to their own, I guess.

Have you looked at Chemical Engineering as opposed to just Chemistry?

well there are times when there is a waiting list and the not so major operations do have to wait like 3 month ( i had to wait 3 months to get a minor operation done). but i hope your daughter is alright. im not quite sure what is in chemical engineering. i will have to look that up and possibly ask a few chem eng. students.
