For all your queries about pay, wherever you work.

The following is a message from townie

Hi guys, whilst I appreciate that it can be very difficult/time consuming to try and find your own pay rates, I am going to encourage members from now on try do so, this is for two reasons.

1) If you find the award/agreement yourself, then you know you'll be getting the right information for the right state etc. and not some rough figure that may be wrong.
2) I think all employees should be familiar with their workplace entitlements.

Now, this doesnt mean that I'm going to go around closing threads asking about pay and simply referring members to this thread, however I will take a dim view of somebody who hasnt at least TRIED to search for their agreement. If a new thread is started about pay, once the question has been resolved, I will merge the posts into this thread. I'd like to hope members would keep pay questions to this thread, I somehow dont think that will happen.

So, how do I find my agreement?

The easiest way is to search on this website:

Australian Government - Workplace Authority: Find a collective agreement

Now, initially you'll have to try work out WHEN your agreement is made, so unless you are 100% sure, I'd search both areas of the website.

You can also call the Workplace Authority on 1300 363 264 (Mon-Fri 7am-8pm) and they should be able to work out what agreement you are covered under.

As a side note, the Workplace Authority Website (Australian Government - Workplace Authority) in general has some very useful information.

What is the minimum wage?
Workplace Authority said:
The Federal Minimum Wage is $14.31 per hour or $543.78 per week (before tax), effective from the first pay period starting on or after 1 October 2008.

The Federal Minimum Wage applies to employees who are:

  • full-time and part-time
  • casual (who also get a 20 per cent casual loading)
  • piece rate workers.

It does NOT apply to employees who are:

  • covered by a pay scale
  • junior employees *
  • employees with a disability
  • working under a registered training scheme.
*Given the minimum wage doesnt cover junior employee's, unfourtunately knowledge of the minimum wage may not be that useful for most of you.

List of Common/Already Found Agreements

I will begin to add some of the more common awards here, and add any more that are asked about in this/other threads.

Note: Pay may be represented as a weekly figure, rather than per hour, usually dividing by 38 will give you the adult hourly rate, you may have to also add loading if your casual (usually 20% - but not always, check the award), also remember to adjust for junior rates (these will be listed in the award). e.g. say you work for the Widget Corporation as an 18 yr old casual, the weekly rate is $621.31 per week. To work out your hourly rate it is $621.31/38=$16.35, then add loading $16.35X1.2=$19.62, then adjust for 18 year old which is (for EXAMPLE ONLY) 70% gives you $19.62*0.7=$13.73

Re: Pay Rate?

my girlfriend, had a work as a receptionist and she didnt get paid for a week worth of training. After that, her pay rate was 6.50. On sundays she gets 9 dollars (time and a half). When she got fed up of these bullcrap, she quit and she just got her pay of around 40-50 hours including sundays for $180. The manager didnt pay her $50 more.

Oh and she's 18.

Western Sydney, especially mt druitt is full of ..

Re: Pay Rate?

Yeah that's really low, I was getting about that when I was 15. Dodgy.

I think award wage for an 18 year old is somewhere in the area of $12/hr.

Slightly off topic (already), but do delivery drivers (pizza, chinese takeaway etc) usually get compensated for fuel costs?

What sort of action can I take if my employer repeatedly does not pay me on time (or if at all), and sends me pay slips (via email and I've only received 3 out of 7 expected slips) but never sends the transaction into my bank account?

Short of resigning (which I will be doing as soon as I get every cent he owes me - almost $500), what options and legal rights do I have? I'm 18, a casual worker and apparently still on probation (3 month period after training - I've been there about a 6 weeks since I finished training). He keeps trying to claim I've only just finished training in the past week, which is complete bullshit cause I started late June.

Would this be a case for small claims, or is it really a lost cause?

I think they mean they get the payslip, saying how much they got paid/tax/etc, but the money never gets paid into their acct.
