It has almost been 12 months since the last election, and it is probably about time that we reflect upon the performance of the Rudd Government since it came to office.

Personally, I find it difficult to make any effective assessment of the performance of Government in light of the Financial Crisis and other financial challenges. Most negative indicators are being attributed to these external factors.

However, at what point should the Government start taking responsibility for these indicators?

It is nearing the time where it can no longer attribute problems to the previous Government. It is also nearing the point at which it must start realise that it must respond to these external factors, and not throw their hands up in the air, resigned to these problems.

The government has achieved a number of symbolic gestures. I care not for these. It seems to spend more time calling for inquiries and committees, than implementing the policy it allegedly took to the last election. A number of 'nation building' funds have been created, but to what end? When will the proceeds of these funds be available to address the capital shortfalls in health and education?

Productivity, Education and infrastructure, each of which were pivotal to the ALP Election Platform, have all but vanished until the 'reports' and 'inquiries' are complete.

Any thoughts?

Pretty good gvt imo, given circs, but i'm waiting for the reshuffle at end of year. Swan to go, Maxine, Debus, frenchie and shorty to get boosted to serious roles
They've been bigger on social controls than people expected I think, but gvt knows best

All talk, less action.

All the actions they're proposing/done is not nice;

- filtering/censoring the internet.
- travelling overseas too much as PM.
- petrol prices, fuelwatch? nope it's gone.
- shopping prices? nope it's shit.
- state-wise Labor is crumbling, Rudd can't do anything.

But that time is not yet, and it probably won't be until next year till we can truly assess the impact (good or bad) of the government's defence measures.

This financial crisis wasn't caused by the Rudd or Howard governments, and the meaningful wave of it only really arrived in Australia in October.

It is also nearing the point at which it must start realise that it must respond to these external factors, and not throw their hands up in the air, resigned to these problems.
The government has been responding, in case you haven't paid attention to the interest rates, insurances, and stimulus packages, to name a few.

Perhaps you consider those "token efforts", or perhaps you're ideologically opposed to them, but the government has been paying very close attention.

Close attention when faced with no other choice.

My gripe is the point made by Tim Colebatch from Melbourne.

The economy is very finely tuned, no doubt about it. And I have inherent biases. However, the talk and promises from the election (aside from fiscal conservativism) have evaporated. The times may require adjustments in policy. However as Rudd campaigned so vigorously in the areas of housing affordability, living expenses and infrastructure renewal, I would have expected to see something to show almost one year on.

All I can hope for is a range of announcements before christmas.

Uhg, more talk of recession.

I truly didn't think it would be possible for this to send Australia into recession because we're so financially secure. Now I'm not so sure.

I guess it hinges on whether or not the insurance assurance fixes itself or the failure takes on a life of its own.

By apologising to the Aboriginals, they've tried to unify Australia. And in a sense, the Australian public can respect this decision.

However, economically, I find we are no better off under labor than we were under the Howard government. Especially we it comes to the value of the Australian dollar. I will admit though, it is hugely subjected to external forces...

Hmm...

Unimpressive. Self-promoting. Useless.

Three words which sum up the Rudd government.

You sound like a socialist.

Do you want K. Rudd in your life telling you what to do and when to do it?

As long as Rudd-Labor don't do anything besides self-promote and other useless things Australia will be a better place.

I was pretty neutral. Just reporting the facts
But it had a slapping noise and everything, so u know she hit the face
And what a battler under humiliation
I laughed most at the attempted recovery, esp 'what's that youve got there?' refering to the guy's lunch

Now Rudd, he'd make an excellent fall. Very fleshy face, has a clumsy alien walk (though it's improving), wears glasses, has glass jaw

In theory, maybe, but in practice.. well, not so much.
