The Pill 'polluting the environment' | Health & Lifestyle | News.com.au

THE contraceptive pill is polluting the environment and is in part responsible for male infertility, a report in the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano said today.

The pill "has for some years had devastating effects on the environment by releasing tonnes of hormones into nature" through female urine, said Pedro Jose Maria Simon Castellvi, president of the International Federation of Catholic Medical Associations, in the report.

"We have sufficient evidence to state that a non-negligible cause of male infertility in the West is the environmental pollution caused by the pill," he said, without elaborating further.

"We are faced with a clear anti-environmental effect which demands more explanation on the part of the manufacturers," Mr Castellvi said.

The article was promptly dismissed by several organisations.

"Once metabolised, the hormones contained in oral contraceptives no longer have any of the characteristic effects of feminine hormones," said Gianbenedetto Melis, vice-president of a contraceptive research association, quoted by the ANSA news agency.

The hormones contained in the pill such as oestrogen "are present everywhere... in plastic, in disinfectants, in meat that we eat," said Flavia Franconi, of the Society of Italian Pharmacology.

Pope Benedict XVI in October reaffirmed the Roman Catholic Church's condemnation of artificial birth control.

Contraception "means negating the intimate truth of conjugal love, with which the divine gift (of life) is communicated," the leader of the world's 1.1 billion Roman Catholics wrote on the 40th anniversary of a papal encyclical on the topic.

An encyclical is a letter usually treating some aspect of Catholic doctrine and issued occasionally by the pope.

The landmark document, whose title in English is On the Regulation of Birth, was published at a time when the development of the Pill was giving new sexual freedom to women across the world.
Millions of Catholics distanced themselves from Rome as a result.

EDIT: Anybody see the report released last week that shows people who take a vow of celibacy (or wait till theyre married for sex) are more likely to have unprotected sex and fall pregnant out of wedlock than those who don't???

Soy contains estrogen. Eating soy products may make males infertile. Science.

My Catholic family, and most Catholics I know, pay little attention to the Vatican. He's like what the Queen is to the British. Heck, even in America, where religious lunacy is accepted as normal, Catholics there overwhelmingly support contraception, and tend to support things like abortion and gay rights.

Only Catholic I know who listens to the Pope is Iron, but he's a bit touched.

My guess is this is far, far, more detrimental to Africa, South-East Asia, and Latin America than anywhere in the Western World.

Which is exactly the Vatican's intent. They realise the West is a lost cause, so are trying to scare the developing countries off Western practices. I imagine the Vatican would be quite content for developing countries to simply not develop, since that way they maintain their strangle-hold on faith due to hopelessness.

No, it doesn't. Graney was being silly.

Soy contains something called phytoestrogens, which are chemicals roughly similar in shape to oestrogen, and thus may bind to the same receptors. In practice, they've been found to bind about 100 times more weakly, if at all.

Perhaps more importantly, though, soy isn't the only thing that contains phytoestrogens; they're also common in meat and cereals.

As Slidey said, this wouldn't really have an effect on those Catholics who are educated.

Mainly the ones in the poorer countries who believe condoms are infected with HIV, thus don't wear condoms.

I.E. the very people who should stop over populating and need the most help when it comes to sex education.

The Philippines government has recently considered introducing incentives not to have children. They're not being dicks about it like the Chinese, but they're basically planning to encourage contraception and having fewer children. The islands are overcrowded and they're struggling to cope economically.

Naturally, the Vatican is applying pressure on them to ditch that scheme (the Philippines is very Catholic) and is encouraging them to procreate more instead. Nevermind that would mean more people born into poverty and disease! No, the Vatican needs more followers, and poverty makes them all the easier to con.

http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1812250,00.html

At least the Philippines has a chance, though. AIDS is low, and the Catholics there actually strongly support contraception. It's just the bonehead politicians and Vatican pressure that's in the way. Similar in most parts of Latin America. Africa, however, is not so lucky.
