"My understanding is the legislation will prohibit the universities' ability to provide funds for other than purely academic services,"
It doesn't answer the question, it gives one person's opinion on that matter.

All that will happen is the union will offer discounts for the union members and very high prices for anyone else. Thus forcing people to join the union anyway. And it will work to, in all places except perhaps UTS where there is so many other stores and facilities on hand.

I'm interested to know what % the $400 a year contribution I make really is in their grand scheme of profits, because I'm sure they still make alot from their other businesses.

think about it 400 a year. is nothing, but 400 times 10 000 students is quite alot.

Well i simply don't imagine that uni's won't be propping up most of these services... in some way or another.
I'm sure there will be loopholes...

I tihnk almost everyone will agree that the union is good for providing public facilities, even for things like childcare which may be of limited use.

What people do not want is political views being supported with these views, as is currently the case. UTS union even advertised on enrollement as some of the good things they did were:

"Removed sexist advertising from around the university"? I mean really, as long as it's abiding by applicable Australia laws, who are they to say it's removed? Anyway, that wasn't nearly as frivelous as:

"Lobbied to stop pro-war sentiments being presented in classes" I mean what the hell is this about? I'm sure the lec/tuts weren't presenting it as the only correct point of view, only one of many.

The union seems to be mainly left wing feminists out to spend alot of money on what THEY think is right, under the guise that this is what ALL students feel. There should be total seperation of political views and facilities.

The fees could be halved without this useless crap and I don't think anyone would have a problem with it then.

I find it interesting that i got told by a tutor about "media bias", and not to trust the media on the issue of unions because they're big corporations and they want to see unions crushed.
Shouldn't I then also ignore his opinions? He's an educator, a teacher, he probably has more involvement with unions than most these days. The teachers union is probably the strongest in this country (not sure if lecturers etc fall under this..)

Actually, the teachers union is a joke. Do you think a stoppage of teachers disrupts any key services?

ROFL at the VSU thing today at USYD.

The Liberals are not taking away the right for students to protest  they are taking away the forcing of students to pay money so that the SRC and Union can protest about what they like and dislike.

Tomorrow there is suppose to be a "Books not Bombs" rally. I'm glad to see some of money go to campaigning for troops out of Iraq  when I support the role they are undertaking there.

Ah, the Union at USyd has only ever rallied against VSU (since 2002, anyway)... The SRC may rally on a more regular basis (the only 'true' rallies are those that actually mean something to all students, such as Nelson's Review), but is that reason enough to just dismiss the SRC's actions when it's primary purpose (student representation for all, funnily enough) is largely undertaken without the furore of a public rally? I for one would hate to the see the safety net that the SRC provides vanish because many believe that it's funding is primarily concerned with 'pointless' rallies and minority causes.

It is their own fault I suppose.

Anyway, the universities can do ways in which encourage students to remain members. They can charge compuslory fee's and then offer a refund in 28 days. Or if they dont offer the refund it is a $100 per student charge. I would have to investigate this last bit more, but if it is only the once per year fee, why do I imagine union fee's going up $100 next year?

That was discussed among vice-chancellors last year as a proposal. But afaik they never approached the government.
