Asquith you may know this: Is the $100 per full time student fine if the refund is not offered within 28 days, a once off fee, or is it per period of time (eg per week)?

If it is once off, I don't imagine anything changing except the government recieving a few million more in revenue. I think it might be per period of time since they were described as heavy handed. But $100 out of USYD's would still put the amount of funding per student the union recieves well above some other universities.

As I understand it, the philosophy behind the bill is not to stop near militant leftism amongst student unions, but more rooted in liberalism, in that students should be able to choose whether or not they join a union or not - i.e. PRO CHOICE.

The only student services which are at risk here are the ones that are not popular enough to be sustainted on their own via a user pays system.

Also, as a side note, the USU is largely misrepresenting the issue as far as I am aware. I've been told that VSU will be the death of clubs and student services at usyd, and will probably dry up the USU altogether.

Somewhat sadly I already read the Bill this morning.

Basically the university's grant amount for that year will be reduced by $100 x the number of students, but it is a once per year reduction.

What the fuck are they worried about then.

Thats only $2.6 million a year for USYD hardly heavy handed. USYD saved $10 million from closing down nursing.

Hmm of course this will probably increase fee's by $150. For some fucked reason.

A slight tangent... Earlier today I bought a chicken and rice meal from one of the Union eateries up on the 4th level of the Wentworth building... My stomach is not happy at the moment :(.

So now all the unions are going to go on some huge campaign when all that will happen is they have to pay the University $100 per student as a kick back. Hmm yay for fee increases

So considering the goverment will likely get around $30-$40 million dollars in savings from grant reductions any other point to this bill?

Ie is it anything more then a reduction in grant funding of $100 per HECS place student?

Rorix: I think the whole idea of the bill is to cut uni funding for HECS places by $100 per student, and then leave the uni's no one to blame but themselves.

So annoyed at the Liberal party right now. At least the legislation could've had balls behind it.

The food in Wentworth is very questionable

Never, EVER try the gravy on the lower level

Also Orange Campus might go and 'according' to USU/SRC possibly Education as well. Oh well, nothing can do but wait and see the results of their actions if any.

Umm hasn't Orange Campus already been sold to CSU. With those who had started while it was USYD will finish grads of USYD.

All this will do is make Unions the bitches of the Universities. If they piss them off too much, just threaten to revoke compulsory fees.

I see.

It seems the rumours of the demise of USU have been greatly exaggerated.

Well if the VSU legislation had balls it might have been, but it would need the fines to be multiplied by 10 or so for it to work.

Only those who pay unions fees will get use of the services provided by the union. At unsw that means all the computers on level one of the library and at other stations around uni.
Other stations around uni? Aren't the Commerce labs independently funded? The law labs? CSE labs? Engineering labs?

Has anyone read about what Macquarie Uni's student council have done? Provides fodder for Nelson to prove that it's the right thing to do. (The article was published in the current Tharunka - UNSW's student newspaper)

For breaching the act, the loss to each uni would be approximately

USYD - $3.18 million
UNSW - $2.72 million

Which in terms of the scale of their budgets, isn't that much at all. Considering an active student union (bars etc) makes it more appealing to international students, and they would otherwise have to provide some of the services.

That seems true, however I doubt unis would simply take the bullet for the students - continued breach of the legislation might compel the courts to put an injunction upon the unis to stop them

and the unis wouldn't dare go against a court ordered injunction.
