im asian.. well, filipino to be exact... so im "different" from 'mainstream' asians.. heheh... i have some chinese ancestry in me and spanish (which explains why im a bit too hairy for normal asians!)

If you join a club/society during o-week do you have to pay the membership fee for that club/society right away?

That's correct. But to join a society for the whole year, it isn't too much. At most, realistically, about $20 to join societies for the entire year.... again this varies from club to club.sunny said:
As a general assumption club/societies such as faculty/school based societies mainly don't charge membership fees. The classic example is Commerce Society...
Either way, I think if theres something you really want to do - don't worry about the fee, just pay it - and have a great time!

You get your student card from e-spot in the Red Center. You use your student card for concession discounts (mainly public transport), getting into most night time events for free and later on for official UNSW things (like exams or borrowing books from the Library). It's not the end of the world if you don't have a student card by the end of O-Week. There are long ques during O-Week, and also Week 1 and 2. My suggestion is to come to O-Week and go to e-spot at around 7PM (it closes at 8PM for O-Week only, normally it closes at 4:30PM) to pick up your student card. I did that last year and there was no que (literally none), whereas during the day you will be lining up for over an hour. Then you can use your new student card to get into one of the night time events like the dance party, comedy night, bands night or movie night (see below for full list of night time events).
If you ever have a question during O-Week, want some help with something or just want someone to talk to, there are 130 yellow shirt volunteers at uni during O-Week (identifiable by their bright yellow shirts). They're all there to make your O-Week as pleasant experience as possible.
In general, I would recomend that you do 3 things during O-Week:
(1) Go to your faculty welcome. They will tell you a lot of basic things on how your degree works. Plus you might meet a few other people doing your course.
(2) Go on a campus tour. There are tours incorporated into each faculty welcome. They go for 2 hours and show you all around campus, including some nice freebies. They are run by the yellow shirt volunteers (like me and Andrew) and are usually a lot of fun (unless you end up on my tour in which case it will probably be the most painful experience ever).
(3) Check out the clubs and societies. There are about 150 clubs at UNSW and most of them will have stalls up during O-Week. The clubs range from sporting clubs, to religious clubs, political clubs, to clubs like the UN society, a comedy club, NUTS (the theatre club), the circuis club, the medieval society, science fiction club and more. Chances are, if there is something you're interested in, there is a club for it. Some are free to join, some charge an entry fee (though rarely more than $5 for the full year). If you're not sure which clubs to join, I recomend asking one of the yellow shirts which clubs they are members of and why.
Of course, there's a whole lot more stuff happening during O-Week. Activities range from free arcade games, to a jumping castle, to free fairy floss, to a preview screening of Derailed on Monday night (which doesn't come out till Thursday), free X-Box 360 gaming, a big dance party, speed dating, bands and more. Come along, pick up a Blitz magazine and have a look at the "What's On" section to see what activities are on during O-Week. I guarantee you that there will be something you're interested in.

Every event is all ages. The Thursday night dance party has an over 18s only area (inside the Roundhouse), but the back beergarden is open to all ages. For the other events you will need to be over 18 to go upstairs where alcohol is being served and you will not be allowed to take any alcohol downstairs. But the events as a whole are open to all ages.
