listen to rock, indie, electronic, post-rock, SHOEGAZE, a bit of classical, trip hop and experimental

How big are your song files roughly? I fit that many songs into around 26Gb, and I'm the type of person who may have 25 minute songs on his iPod.

Nah, 36 gb sounds about right.
I have just under 12000 songs and have used 54gb, and I have a lot of short songs. Anything less than about 4mb per song means you probably have a lot of your music encoded poorly.
