That's a bit harsh ... Many great doctors around prior to such high entry requirements were probably no smarter than your average guy. Victor Chang for instance..
Ambition, dedication and personal skills are required, not necessarily academia
The nature of the degree requires a high academic level actually. Trust me when I say that the content you learn in medicine is on the whole much more challenging than the hsc imo, and as such you need to demonstrate a fairly high level of intelligence.

The nature of the degree yes. I was inferring to the fact you can still be a good doctor without being the smartest

This - You need a fair degree of natural intelligence to complete a medical degree and become a doctor. But obviously you dont need to be the smartest person around to be successful as a physician.

Nope, but how do you expect to get there sunshine. With worse competition than ever, wouldn't say, the doctors who have golden references because of their epic skillz, published papers, and higher degrees (i.e. academic) get the limited training positions.

That's all I was getting at :)
I'm aware you wouldn't want someone who got obscenely low hsc marks being your doctor, but to say someone who got between 93.5 - 95 shouldn't be one just didn't seem right to me

good work ethic and communication skills are much more important than intelligence. i have seen many intelligent people (high 99ers) who fail or do poorly and get held back a year.

OHHH please do not start this debate....
There are so many 99+ med students that don't deserve to do med....getting 99+ is all about memorizing for most subjects....That just wont work with a career as a doctor where u have to be versatile and adaptable to various situations. RATHER than memorising syllabus dotpoints.
