If being in a society or club is the only way to socialise on campus, then i must be one big loser, as i am not part of any club or society nor do i participate in any union events (besides free bbqs as free food is free food, actually, i paid for it so it's not really free is it?)

But low and behold, i have a great social life at uni. I meet and talk to many people, many of them not part of any club or society themselves, and shock, horror, we don't need the union to hold our hand when socialising (as some people may do)

Do i go to uni to get a degree? Yes. Do i go to uni to socialise? Yes. Is this socialisation part of the union? No.

So can some someone please tell me why do i have to pay my fees if i don't buy the subsidised gear, not part of any club or society, don't participate in any union events, don't hold the political stance of the union etc. Why do i have to pay?

I'm glad to see this post is rather essay-like in its approach:

- Introduction
- Bitchy arguement (including much snobbish mud-slinging from Thrushypants), and finally
- Resolution.

So, what've we all learned boys and girls? Not really that much. Some people with always agree with other like-minded people, and disagree with other unlike-minded people.

The past few, tamed, posts have hit my arguement on the head. I don't want VSU nor the current USU but a reform to the existing system. I don't get how there's a difference between people having to pay uni fees to go see professors and having to pay USU to use the things provided by the USU.

Hence, here's my manifesto for resolution:

1) Rather than making people pay the full price, created a tiered system whereby those who aren't on campus pay minimal fees, a person who uses some services to pay mid-range and those who use all the clubs pay maximum fees. Also, to have a CentreLink pensioners or low-income discount for holders of those cards

1a) Frig off, you may say, what's to stop someone from saying that they don't use any of the services then going ahead an using them? Well I'd say, with the fiercely-divided nature of student unionism, social pressure would stop people - Tall Poppies annonymous.

2) Prevent student unions from supporting political interests, Plato wrote extensively on this.

3) Please add more...these are just prelim ideas.
1a is just a stupid concept and won't work.

Asquithian, I pay taxes, I support the wider community. Why should I give them ANOTHER layer of support within the university run by students who would rather spend millions on fighting VSU than adapting to VSU to become a viable option for most students.

Don't tell me they won't have enough money for "critical services" when at the moment they can run critical services, have a huge campaign, and at the same time fund some clubs which are frankly stoopid "LOL LETS GET TOGETHER AND WATCH SUBSIDIZEd ANIME".

I am more than happy to pay extra fee's to look after people in the university who may truely need a bit of extra help, but you're making it sound like support for vsu makes you a monster, like i don't care about other people. I care about other people, i care about the people who are getting ripped off by this union bullshit.
Oh god. It's one of those 'I pay taxes' children.

You might as well put a f*cking 'I hunt therefore I vote' sticker on your BMW.

Yeah, but nobody actually believes that. And if they do, they don't actually care.

Most of the first years seemed pretty convinced by Angus' ramblings...

So you agree some have been brainwashed into believing everything the union states as fact without precedent for it?

No. Frankly I have no idea how you drew that from my post. I was saying Phanatical can't speak for everyone on campus. Neither can I. We need to ask those people themselves.

I guess my main problem is that so many of his posts are statements not substantiated by evidence.

Um, ALL of my posts are substantiated by evidence. I rarely, if ever say anything unsubstantiated. I just happen to refer to "Everybody" instead of "Everybody except stupid people like Techie", because the opinions of stupid, uninformed people (like Techie) don't really count.

If you looked at the post to which Phanatical was replying to, you could see where I got that from.

Just that you don't feel a need to cite evidence because what you say is obviously true :)

Xayma, I know we were talking about brainwashing etc. but what I said never implied I believed people had been brainwashed. I was saying we need to ask people themselves, not assume a homogenous opinion like Phanatical.
