The sensationalism of it all is accentutated by the fact that if Schappelle Corby was a big fat man with 11 tattoos, this might make page 25 of the paper. Might.
That's true.

Look at it this way too, Spell Check. A serial killer murdered someone close to person A. Because of lack of evidence, under the Australian legal system, the killer is not found guilty. This can happen to anyone. Not trying to discredit you (you do have a point about Indonesia's system), but this is the other side of things.

I think, ultimately, Indo's legal system seems to be unfair (note: seems) with Corby's circumstances. But Aussie's legal system can be outragously unfair in another case.

Btw, I find the rumours around her appaling, like the one about being a prostitute in Japan. It's gone too far.

but she didn't even touch the bag - it was seized and searched before she could collect it in bali

V sia, don't say that either. Nobody knows whether she is innocent or guilty.

But (and I'm sure this has already been discussed, though possibly elsewhere) the media was rather biased. I cannot recall a single piece of evidence against her other than the bodyboard bag stuffed with dope (which was called into question by a witness whose testimony was little more than hearsay) because the media didn't report it. A lot of her supporters who are convinced of her innocence are protesting against her sentence (which, as Alexander Downer pointed out, will do more harm than good - and for once I agree with him), but I'm willing to bet they're in a simlar position to most Australians - they have absolutely no idea about the evidence against her.

What shits me is that they have committed themselves to fighting to the last breath to get her out of there - but I challenge anyone with this view to first of all A) name one of the other 14 Australians currently imprisoned in Indonesia (NOT including the "Bali Nine"), B) name the charge(s) they're imprisoned for and C) launch a similar "Good Samaritan" campaign to ge them out.

I'm willing to bet they won't even be able to get as far as B.

Pity isn't it? That's what I meant by people not being in the right place at the right time, ironically. Image does count - justice still doesn't work 100% either way.

That's where Law students come in. You people better create the justice system that WORKS!!

I think here's the very basic of Australia's and Indonesia's legal system:

Australia - prosecutor must find the defendant guilty
- therefore guilty people can get off jail

Indonesia - defence team must find the defendant innocent
- therefore innocent people can get in jail

I don't think one is better than the other. They have weak points and stuff. To insult Indonesia's system is to be naive.

Anyway, this media attention reminds of the movie Chicago. Anyone's watched it?
Reading articles by some lawyers, there are apparently laws in Indonesia which do state that the prosecutor must prove their guilt and then defence shows that is wrong.

I think that might be harder to do with a group of judges compared to a jury who are less likely to be swayed emotionally (given the pure volume they go through).

I watched 7:30 report an hour ago. That Asian Law professional knows what he's talking about. The judges have given the optimal sentence, but they don't satisfy the defence team and the prosecution. The judges were in a no-win situation:

guilty verdict: "Indonesia's system doesn't work"
innocent verdict: "The media has done it again"

^ Yes, I agree. I know it's tragic that 9 Australians have died in Indonesia (I shed a tear when watching the coverage of their bodies' arrival in Australia), but this doesn't mean that Australians get a special treatment in any way.

they killed those 9 guys that were busted with drugs? OMG i feel like i've been living under a rock.....

that's really sad to hear

guys, fret not, do what i do. avoid television altogether. if you don't watch it for say, 1 month and you come back, you'll realise you haven't really missed out on much at all (apart from the occasional simpsons episode). i had a much more fulfilled life away from that stupid box

ps. i did watch tv today however, i didn't get the chance to read the paper. btw, how bad was a current affair? like half of the show was an ad for ebay or something and the other portion was filled up with ads themselves, leaving one exclusive, but plain crappy, interview and to add more insult, it was only what? under 5 minutes? it was just some egotistic rambling without conviction. man i hate that show, i actually thought the interview would be somehow insightful

sorry for my rave but it seemed appropriate in this thread. the court case was very unconvincing, from ALL aspects...don't seems like i'll continue watching for much longer before i boycott the shitbox again.

Wait a minute...

I checked out various topics, and there are HEAPS of sensible people who are still unsure of her innocence or guilt.

Then, who're the 90% that vote their support for Corby? Hmmm?

Not really, NTB. It's fairly representative, if slightly skewed on certain matters. Then again, I'm basing this on what I believe to be the views of the majority.

I just don't get why people are soooooo sure 100% that she is innocent. I mean, I want her to be innocent, but I just can't be sure about it!

Nobody but Corby herself would know the answer to what's supposed to be the million dollar question.

There ARE people who believe that Australia should be exempt from Indonesia's law because of its tsunami aid.

I think I overheard in the TV that someone close to her (I think her friend) was so fiery, he shouted like "we have sacrificed 9 lives for your sake". This is utter nonsense and is disgusting how people overlook justice in that way.
