If my rankings are, this is just an made up scenario.

Mathematics Extension 1 (9/30)

Mathematics (4/50)

Advanced English (32/70)

Modern History (10/40)

Legal Studies (3/20)

Ecenomics (6/45)

This is something totally made up. I just want to get a rough idea of how far I need to aim to get an 90+ atar. Are these ranks alright?

Considering you go to North Sydney Girls, you would probably get around 99 with those ranks

How does my school rank? If I go to a school with a better rank, how does that impact my ATAR?

So if I went to a lower school, like ranked in the top 150, would that bring it down? Just trying to figure out how this works.

All the schools are ranked.

If you are rated high in a highly ranked school, then it is assumed you will do better than if you were ranked highly in a low ranking school, because the standard of others students must be higher.

So if I went to a lower school, like ranked in the top 150, would that bring it down? Just trying to figure out how this works.
If you had those same rankings, yes. But chances are, if you were at a lower ranked school, you would have a higher ranking. So technically, your marks aren't affected.

It doesnt, giving us your school rank helps us gauge the strength of your cohort. For example, coming 5/60 for 2 unit in a school ranked 5th in the state is alot different then coming 5/60 for 2 unit in a school ranked 500th.

So if this was just an school ranked like 170, what would be my ATAR? Trying to find out because logically I don't think I will get THOSE ranks, that was just an total made up scenario.

Probably 91-93. But a person ranked 9th out of 30 for extension 1 maths at North Sydney Girls would probably be ranked 1st or 2nd at a school ranked 170.

this year there's 122 people doing 3u maths
77 2u maths
~160 advanced english
~50 modern
16 legal studies
53 economics

if you want a 90+ atar you would probably want to get in the top 80% to be safe, not actually too sure how the statistics go though

Okay, lower ranked school you need higher ranks. Higher ranked school means you need lower ranks to get the same ATAR. It's not a disadvantage, you would still be performing the same but at a higher school you would have a lower rank for your efforts.

E.g
Rank 400 school
1st in all subjects

vs
Rank 100 school
Just coming top ten in all

Could get a similar ATAR

Overly simplified but the principal.
