Firstly, you're looking at WoW like you would any game which is a wrong approach as the addictive aspect comes into effect when you begin to grow emotionally attached (i know it sounds stupid) to your avatar and experience satisfaction from completing a task with a party of other players. As a MMORPG, if you were to take the online compatability out of it - you would be looking at a horribly boring and pointless RPG which would fit into what you were saying about "giant chore".
Like this thread has pointed out already, MMORPGs are not a healthy thing to get heavily into. Its probaly killed more koreans than drugs and alcohol put together but when taken in moderation, the game can be a pleasant escape from RL...
