Anyone actually found use with the sda union? Starting in longlife in a few weeks, tossing up whether its worth it to join. Ideas??

Oh I completely agree with you Townie, you do not need to be a Uni graduate to have good customer service. Most Uni graduates need to be shot down a peg or two because they think they are top of the world and better than us.

Hmm, I went to Town Hall woolies for the first time. Surprised how small/compacted it is compared to my woolies. Especially the Deli... so much smaller, but they have a bigger bainmarie for the hot chickens.

I really didn't think I was going to start a war here. Customer service as a whole is not something that you can be taught at university. Better than us is a subjective term. Are graduates intellectually smarter than those who have a TAFE course or only finished in year 12/10? Almost certainly. But as I said, customer service is something that cannot be taught at a university. I find the people at my store who are either graduated or are juggling university whilst working have a better grasp of things than others due to skills picked up at university - time management etc. But that is not to say that those who don't are not valued employees. If customer service is your passion, why waste three years doing a meaningless degree?

Re: unions, I personally find them a waste of time. It is approximately $7 a week if you earn above $300 from memory. In fact, I don't know anyone at work who is actually in the union. However, if you want peace of mind and think that $7 a week is a small price to pay for that, then by all means go for it.

People who go to university are more formally educated in a particular academic system, that's all. There are plenty of unintelligent people at uni. You're assuming people go to TAFE or drop out of school because they're stupid, when that simply isn't true for a huge number of cases.

Their is about 100000 articles of empirical evidence that actually does suggest people at university are 'more intelligent'.

You probably assume that most people who live in ethiopia are stupid, because due to less education and other factors they compartively are. That's not wrong or discrimination, it's just logical fact.

Varies depending on how much you work... the less you work, the less you pay. I think it starts from around $4 and increases.

Also, fee increases imminent, methinks. They change the maximum now.. and pass this on later.

The effect of the change to Rule 23(a) was to increase the maximum possible annual
membership fees that a Branch can set from $400 to $600. Actual membership fees
set by the Branches are lower than the permitted maximum.

I was with the union when i worked at woolies before but yeah never had a need to use it. Just wanted to see what everyone else was doing. Also found the exact fees for anyone who wanted to know;

Fees effective 1 July 2007. Fees Payable If you work 20 hours per week or more: $7.40 per week. If you work 10 hours but less than 20 hours per week: $5.40 per week. If you work less than 10 hours per week: $3.30 per week.

If I was working alone in my department and had little work left to do I might consider it, but I wouldn't officially take a tea on a four hour shift, no.

I want a job in woolies, Do you think they even look at their online system for hiring. I have v bad experience with Coles they hardly reply back to applications. I think they have lobby system store managers hires people he knows. My nearby coles and safeways managers are indian and they only hires Indains.

Any ways I am endup working at IGA and hardly gets 13$ before tax. This job sucks and want a change.
