"your" Church? i'm quoting what i've learnt through 12 years of intense religion lessons and the readings and...homilies, is it called?.....when i used to be religious. i'm kinda arguing with you coz i'm running out of things to do around the house and you seem to be a very intelligent person. unlike all the idiots at school who lie about their faith coz they don't like the public system.

i'm in the catholic system coz i wanted to stay with my friends and i do well in religion. also my mum weny to the catholic schools here, and her mum, and her mum.....ect.

i'm out of arguments so unless someone wants to bring up creationism vs evolution (on which there are plenty of anti creationism books on our bookshelf) i am going to shut up

please don't consider our 'lively banter' as 'arguments' per se,
but rather some encouraging.. or discernment between scriptures..

i went to a catholic school for a year in year 6.
it's sad to see most of them arn't even catholic anymore.
they're more worldly then those who attend public schools. (well depends on the public school i guess )

i hope my points raised.. clarified some aspects?
like the devil not being the ruler of hell, and the canonisation of the bible.

what was it that made you not be so 'religious'?

Christianity is not more of a 'institutionalized religion', than a passion for God.
I mean, i used to cringe everytime the pastor would say 'christanity is not a religion, it's a relationship with Jesus Christ' at the altar calls, but i've realised it myself.

some people have said 'wow, you're very religious.. (insert my name here)'.
but i think to myself..
no i'm not, i'm just passionate.

didn't i answer my atheism earlier in this thread? it's just when i pick up the bible and look at chapters like Leviticus i think "thank God we've moved on. thank God women aren't discriminated against to that extreme because it is enough to deal with coming of age without all of that." but its still written there.
and when i look at the New Testament i think "well, even the Gentiles believed in being nice to other people". doing the right thing is not limited to Christianity.

you have to understand that women were severely restricted by jewish law and custom in israel.
it's where you look at the new testament, you see Jesus Christ saying no to racism, no to sexism, no to religious law, etc.
it's where the character of Jesus Christ shines through.

doing the right thing is not limited to Christianity.

Christianity is not about doing the 'right thing'.
come on, you and i both know that.

i push a lot of things until i get someone pissed off with me. i'm good at adjusting to name changes like the ATAR thing and my friends aren't. i correct my friends and family if anyone speaks with an American accent. i don't know many people at school who actually care about philosophical debate or global events so i've learnt to stick to Twilight's Edward vs Jacob and websliders (mimes gagging) because so many people in Catholic schools are shamefully ignorant.

I've had "why should we have to learn about other religions? it's pointless!" grr. if she wasn't a friend i would have said "how about the global village is shrinking and ignorance is the major cause of discrimination and violence! You'd want them to understand us!"

although the webslider thing started the American accent argument on the word "data" and recharge receipts vs cards....lol

we all have faith.
we all have a world view..

how do you treat people?
how do you respond to your enemies?
how do we respond to a person who stole from us?

it's our ethical decisions that show what our faith is in.. our world view.

a communist, a capitalist, a socialist, a hedonist, a materialist, a theist, an agnostic, an atheist..

we have faith that someone or something is reliable and trustworthy.
everyone of us has faith.

i am convinced to the root of my being that Jesus Christ is by far the most reliable object of your faith and my faith.
don't take it from me, read the gospels for yourself.
examine him and ask yourself..
is he trustworthy?
is he reliable?

please guys, take your sharp skeptical guns and train them on yourselves.
ask yourself.
what am i living for?
what is the evidence that whoever or whatever i am living for is reliable and trustworthy, and is not going to rip you off in the end.

what's a midlife crisis?

a midlife crisis is when you realize (i'll take the classic wall street example) that you've leaned the ladder of my life up against wall street.. the ASX.. stock portfolios.. and now i'm in my mid life.. it;s not all that i thought it would be.. not all i thought i was.. and now i'm going through a crisis..
an existentialist crisis of identity of what i should live for, and who i should live for.

examine the gospels,
look at Jesus Christ.
the evidence is he is reliable in a way none of the options are.

Jesus' radical treatment of women:

i'm alive because my parents wanted kids before they split up (but i don't hold it against them or even what to know why (i was too young)) and my life is meaningful because i help the people around me that i make connections with. i dream, i work, i create, and when i pass away i survive in the objects that were connected to me and in the memories of the people i shared my life with. All one big web of interconnectedness, all interrelated, all building a society purely because we can.

i believe it was chance that led us to where we are, and on a smaller scale where i am, today. i am the product of my genetics along with what i have been taught. they both say i should be as nice to other people as i humanly can be so the web i live within becomes stronger and so my life becomes more meaningful. i want to be more productive and help the society and hopefully i will be able to do this by studying a branch of medicine that i will decide on later. if not, i'll become a teacher. if you can't do, teach lol

awwe thanks. it's a bit of both i guess. i mean, if i can't stand myself, who can stand me. i don't want to feel lazy and selfish. But it's good to think that maybe my sisters feel better when i do something they ask me to or that it makes my friends lives better if i make their day better. it's nice to think someone could actually use my few talents because then my existance has a purpose. everyone wins

The "4 L's Philosophy" (Sounds pretty gay, but actually seems to address things pretty nicely):

Live: Living your life rather than just existing, taking opportunities when they're presented.
Love: Loving what you do and finding passion in things, having convictions in your actions.
Learn: Perpetual learning to improve knowledge and understanding
Legacy: Creating something that others will remember you by, making a footprint both short-term and the long-term.

How these principles relate to an individuals life totally depends on their own interpretation. Happiness and contentment in their own eyes.

I am not sure what's happened on your walk,
but I'm sure you're familiar with the parable of the lost sheep?

i'm not trying to be like 'convert back or something bad will happen'.

but in my lifetime, i have seen things, and people have shared testimonies with me; that they were once christians, but had backslidden.
God the shepard, then made some circumstances, so that you would run back to him..
think of the story of the prodigal son.

one instance was a leader at my old church.
at first i thought he was pretty nerdy.
he looked pretty nerdy..
but he shared his testimony with our group (me and my brother were new to this group, the others knew his testimony)..

basically when he was 7 or 9 (i can't remember which it was), he gave his life to God.. but some things happened, and he got very angry..
so fast forward to year 12. he's now high up in the gang with 30 'boys' under him..

he got into a brawl with some other gang and in the midst of it, he stabbed another guy in the stomach, and he was going to go to jail for seven years i think it was.
anyway something miraculous happened, and he was brought under conviction.
someone prophesied to him this parable for the lost sheep. then he was given a choice.. go to jail, or turn back.

he chose to turn back.
and he cleaned up good.
hence why i thought he was joking and fell right off my chair when he said 'back when i was a gang leader'

his name was in the book of life.

I was affiliated with a decent church that Dean Waters goes to. Interesting chap, extremely sad story. Only in his circumstances, should the need for a custodial sentence be removed.
