Hi guys,

After the trial, the finals ranks were that there were 3 people tied on 1st. I am one of them. Does the 'top external mark go to the top ranked internal person' thing still apply? Also, if I get the top external mark, will I have to share my lovely external mark with the two others for their assessment mark?

The top three external marks will be averaged.

If you get the outright top mark in the exam you will get a lower internal mark than that

e.g. if the exams marks are 98, 96 and 90 then you will all get 95 as the moderated assessment mark but you would still get 98 for your exam giving you 97 as the HSC mark.

If you all get 98 for the external then you all get 98 as the final mark.

If one of the others get 98 as the top mark then you will still keep your external mark and the average of the top three exam marks as the internal.

I am of the understanding that the highest mark externally overall will be awarded to the three people in first as their moderated school mark, and their own external HSC marks will differentiate the three.

That seems fairer than averaging the top 3 external marks...

My friend is =1st in chem and beat me by 6 marks in the trial and I came 2nd. If that's how this works he is fucked.

You might, but is it what actually happens? I've never heard of that system before.

I believe so as this is what actually happened amongst the cohort with regard to internal marks last year at my school

It is - I have had it happen a number of times.

If the system you described earlier was in place - the top external mark given to all of them - why would schools send in any students not equal first as then all of them get the top exam mark as their internal mark.

So instead of sending in 1 student on 90 I could send in all 10 on 90 and then they all get the 95 that my top student earns on the exam and they exam then separates them??

The moderation process in the BOS http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/hsc-results/moderation.html says "

Note that if a school submits assessment marks with two (or more) students tied on the top assessment mark, then the top moderated assessment mark is equal to the mean of the top two (or more) examination marks. This is also the case if students are tied on the bottom assessment mark. Please also note that the standard deviation is never used to moderate school assessment marks.
