I was kind of forced into doing Standard English at my school this year. I mean, my marks weren't great, but I do intend on doing a lot more study now. It's going around my school that if you do Standard English, you can't get an ATAR above 98. Is that true?

Aww. Thanks. I feel much better now. Although it is funny how the people who replied don't do Standard themselves.

You can get up to 99.95 with ANY subjects-it's just more improbable with some.

I can't be bothered dragging Table A whatever out-but it does have the highest ATAR someone got in a course where it was included and the highest Standard person last year got 99. something

A tutor at my centre did subjects like mine, only with chem instead of biology, and she managed to get 99.2 or 99.3?

Someone on this forum got 99. something doing Standard english. Although this requires you to get band 6 (which is difficult) or close to state ranking.

Mate, work hard, get a flair for writing and practice. Remember to get opinions from outside school as well.
As long as you do all that you should do well in English.
I BSed and wrote my worst essays, short answers and story ever in English and I got 86 in the exam, so just try and you an probably get in the 90s. :)
Good luck.
Also, as long as you rank first you should do well. :)

It is hard.
I did standard and got above that.

It is EXTREMELY hard to get Band 6 in Standard. This year 56 students got Band 6 in Standard English. That is out of 34,593 students (0.16%)

Band 5 was 8.7% this year (3,011 students)

Compared to Advanced, which is 13.3%B6 and 44.85%B5

It's hard to Band 6 in Standard BUT - my old school had 3 that got Band 6 and 2 state ranks in it. It's not selective either.

I doubt most selective schools even place Standard English as a subject choice. Serious, they will force you to do Advanced english for your own sake T.T

My friend had the logic that, considering most standard english candidates fuck around, getting a band 6 seems much harder than it actually is. Also, as Aysce mentioned, most selective schools do not offer it and so the competition is cut down by a lot. What do you guys think?

Yes competition is cut down, but that doesn't change the fact that 95% of standard english are derps that are just there for the lulz. Some pretty high ranked schools like St George Girls do standard so there is still some competition out there. Thankfully, it is safe to say, around the top 15 do not offer standard english ie NSB, NSG etc
