I find it interesting to see how much diversity of beliefs there are even between those who agree on the (non)existence of God.

I found this and found it interesting and worth a read for anyone interested in this subject. http://www.horrormasters.com/Text/a0293.pdf. "Dialogue Between a Priest and a Dying Man", written in 1782 by the Marquis de Sade. Kind of an 18th century version of those "A Christian student and an atheist teacher" things you see all over Facebook today. But whatever - it is an interesting and relevant piece of work nonetheless.

Just saw this on facebook. y do people do dis then say it's a quote from somebody who obviously didn't say it :(:( Don't do dis, ever.

Professor : You are a Christian, aren’t you, son ?

Student : Yes, sir.

Professor: So, you believe in GOD ?

Student : Absolutely, sir.

Professor : Is GOD good ?

Student : Sure.

Professor: Is GOD all powerful ?

Student : Yes.

Professor: My brother died of cancer even though he prayed to GOD to heal him. Most of us would attempt to help others who are ill. But GOD didn’t. How is this GOD good then? Hmm?

(Student was silent.)

Professor: You can’t answer, can you ? Let’s start again, young fella. Is GOD good?

Student : Yes.

Professor: Is satan good ?

Student : No.

Professor: Where does satan come from ?

Student : From … GOD …

Professor: That’s right. Tell me son, is there evil in this world?

Student : Yes.

Professor: Evil is everywhere, isn’t it ? And GOD did make everything. Correct?

Student : Yes.

Professor: So who created evil ?

(Student did not answer.)

Professor: Is there sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness? All these terrible things exist in the world, don’t they?

Student : Yes, sir.

Professor: So, who created them ?

(Student had no answer.)

Professor: Science says you have 5 Senses you use to identify and observe the world around you. Tell me, son, have you ever seen GOD?

Student : No, sir.

Professor: Tell us if you have ever heard your GOD?

Student : No , sir.

Professor: Have you ever felt your GOD, tasted your GOD, smelt your GOD? Have you ever had any sensory perception of GOD for that matter?

Student : No, sir. I’m afraid I haven’t.

Professor: Yet you still believe in Him?

Student : Yes.

Professor : According to Empirical, Testable, Demonstrable Protocol, Science says your GOD doesn’t exist. What do you say to that, son?

Student : Nothing. I only have my faith.

Professor: Yes, faith. And that is the problem Science has.

Student : Professor, is there such a thing as heat?

Professor: Yes.

Student : And is there such a thing as cold?

Professor: Yes.

Student : No, sir. There isn’t.

(The lecture theater became very quiet with this turn of events.)

Student : Sir, you can have lots of heat, even more heat, superheat, mega heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat. But we don’t have anything called cold. We can hit 458 degrees below zero which is no heat, but we can’t go any further after that. There is no such thing as cold. Cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We cannot measure cold. Heat is energy. Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it.

(There was pin-drop silence in the lecture theater.)

Student : What about darkness, Professor? Is there such a thing as darkness?

Professor: Yes. What is night if there isn’t darkness?

Student : You’re wrong again, sir. Darkness is the absence of something. You can have low light, normal light, bright light, flashing light. But if you have no light constantly, you have nothing and its called darkness, isn’t it? In reality, darkness isn’t. If it is, well you would be able to make darkness darker, wouldn’t you?

Professor: So what is the point you are making, young man ?

Student : Sir, my point is your philosophical premise is flawed.

Professor: Flawed ? Can you explain how?

Student : Sir, you are working on the premise of duality. You argue there is life and then there is death, a good GOD and a bad GOD. You are viewing the concept of GOD as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, Science can’t even explain a thought. It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one. To view death as the opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing.

Death is not the opposite of life: just the absence of it. Now tell me, Professor, do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey?

Professor: If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, yes, of course, I do.

Student : Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?

(The Professor shook his head with a smile, beginning to realize where the argument was going.)

Student : Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavor. Are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you not a scientist but a preacher?

(The class was in uproar.)

Student : Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the Professor’s brain?

(The class broke out into laughter. )

Student : Is there anyone here who has ever heard the Professor’s brain, felt it, touched or smelt it? No one appears to have done so. So, according to the established Rules of Empirical, Stable, Demonstrable Protocol, Science says that you have no brain, sir. With all due respect, sir, how do we then trust your lectures, sir?

(The room was silent. The Professor stared at the student, his face unfathomable.)

Professor: I guess you’ll have to take them on faith, son.

Student : That is it sir … Exactly ! The link between man & GOD is FAITH. That is all that keeps things alive and moving.

P.S.

I believe you have enjoyed the conversation. And if so, you’ll probably want your friends / colleagues to enjoy the same, won’t you?

Forward this to increase their knowledge … or FAITH.

By the way, that student was EINSTEIN.
The continuation:

A professor once said to a class of his students:
"For real guys, that Einstein story is completely retarded and needs to stop. The logic presented in the argument is flawed, unfounded and otherwise semantical, and despite all of the recorded evidence of his opposing beliefs, Einstein's name is just tacked on to the bottom to add a false sense of credibility to an otherwise worthless story. It's an insult to associate the name of Einstein with such an embarrassing display of human ignorance. I'll fail the next one of you faggots that share it (srs)."

(The students dared not to say a word, a few already aware of their guilt. Some guy up the back scrambled onto his iPhone to quickly unlike the post).

After much silence however, a single student emerged from the crowd, and with such elegance and bravery, he spoke:
"But sir, how else can we alert the masses of the TRUTH and POWER of GOD without senselessly reposting baseless, misleading and nonsensical stories like that on Facebook? Instead of keeping to ourselves, isn't emotionally blackmailing people via Facebook the most effective means of spreading our ideas?
In the end, aren't Likes the /true/ measure of a believer's morale?"

(The class was shocked, how could the professor possibly recover from this astounding display of courage and intellect?! One student LITERALLY passed out from the INTENSE PASSION (/OF THE CHRIST/) that was present in the room).

But after a moment of thought, the professor replied:
"Enjoy your religion all you want, that's your right! But if it's so holy and noble, why reduce it into something so trivial?"

Again, the student rose, exalted in his presence amongst the mere mortals around him, and replied:
"But sir, you're missing the point. I don't really care about God or Christianity at all, I just want the likes! You know, I can even put my name in the first comment and then every bitch will be adding me. I mean, 'Like for heaven and ignore for hell'? Shit's so cray."

(The professor was, quite visibly confused at this point.
The class fell silent, frozen in anticipation for some more JESUS TRUTH BOMBS being dropped by the BRAVE student.)

The professor was really just no match, but his feeble mind, corrupted by the evils of science and rationality, pressed on:
"But, there's just no evidence for anything that you're saying. Einstein never said anything like tha-"

The student cut him off, he had no time for this ridiculous, liberal logic, and with unshakeable conviction in his voice, he proclaimed:
"But sir... If enough people believe me and not you, why would I need any proof at all?
What is EVIDENCE when you have ~FAITH~?!"

The class all then became Christian and the professor was crucified and during autopsy they discovered he was literally Satan.

........oh && btW tHe stUdENt's nAME???

Wow, only 50% believe in a god. Considering a large number of those must be muslims, jews, etc, we can finally say that (amongst young people at least) christians are outnumbered by the rest of society.
What I would really like to see is the same poll, but only answered by people who score an ATAR of 98+.
I suspect that in such a poll the number of people believing in god would be halved.
the entire content of this post is wrong

Really? My post is based on the poll at the top of the page. What evidence do you have to suggest that is wrong?
My post came with SOME evidence. Your post comes without ANY evidence, so is merely an opinion.

A Nielsen survey in 2009 found that 42% of Australians under 25 did not believe in god. For males under 25 it was over 50%. And these numbers had grown over previous surveys. So considering that (1) belief decreases as age decreases (2) it is 3 years later (3) most people on this site are under 18 [not 25], the figures in this poll look pretty correct.

Further, a survey conducted in the US in 2008 showed "Atheists scored an average of 1.95 IQ points higher than Agnostics, 3.82 points higher than Liberal persuasions, and 5.89 IQ points higher than Dogmatic persuasions". That is my evidence in support of my final claim.
So in any of those surveys, which one tells you that Jews or Muslims are more common than Christians

and which one of those surveys are specifically from students in the last 3 years (because they're the only ones with ATAR's) state that 75% of those who scored above 98 were atheists

Outnumbered by those who don't believe in God, not society. I think that's the difference.

I don't think it's a big enough sample to prove anything. Measures of intelligence are totally different in the HSC, than in the real world. There was correlation between the scientists in relevant fields with a belief in God, but I don't have the numbers on me at the moment.

The human brain et al are incredibly complex. Nature alone could not have pulled off the greatest engineering of all time.
There's this thing called evolution which happened over billions of years that explains this incredibly complexity in living organisms. Go learn about it.

Well, as far as I am concerned the evidence for the existence of a christian god is as strong as the evidence for the existence of Odin. With that said I plan to live my life as an Athiest because the "godless" universe is the one that I have experienced and until I experience anything else that is how it will stay. I like to use Occam's razor in my approach to cosmology.

interesting thread. Before I thought there are quite a number of Christians in Australia, but now I can see atheism also holds a significant number.

By far not significant enough. Christianity slows down societal progress, because it aims to keep society behaving a certain way to "please god"

christianity doesn't "do" anything. Individual christians who are constituents of "society" behave in a certain way to attain their subjective desires. A change in society from its present state to another certainly does not necessarily mean "progress" is being made in any objective sense. You may not prefer the society that christians allegedly work to keep (which I think is a load of crap, anyway), but progress is a meaningless concept if you're going to use it to mean whatever type of societal change personally pleases you

I am well read on the theory of evolution. Likewise the theory of intelligent design.

What is wrong with those values though? 'Thou shalt not kill', 'though shall not steal' - seem alright to me.
