I use a fountain pen and I had the same trouble with my ink, except it faded on the page. it wasn't too bad until I used it in my half yearly chemistry exam and my teacher said I needed a better pen. So I went to an art shop and asked for some good quality ink that wouldn't fade and I got a 35ml pot for $18. it's expensive compared to my last ink but it's good quality Indian calligraphy ink.

Do you use inkjoy pens? I've found they're not very consistent once they start to run out.
