GUYS,

how are we meant to know in short answer whether to be really descriptive on what is happening in the text or to just add a lot of technique and analysis. A lot of nesa examples write barely any techniques for a 5+ marker but they talk a lot of whats going on.

what do we look for to know where to do that????

In most texts you should be able to know the literal events of a text. Unless its some crazy poem, where if it is, just makee something up based on the few things iin the text that you do get.

Check the title too, it might give away what is happening.

Just frame your analysis like that. "Through the anecdotal depcition of a family picnic, in which the young child cannot sit still, J. Egan uses the metaphor of..."

balance it like that

reading time for me I would read the text then look at the question, then move on to the next text and do the same thing etc... and in my head im making like rubric connections and getting techniques/quotes out of them. then I had 3 minutes to spare so I reread one text carefully that was really stumping me then I spent 1 minute just glaring over the essay question.

everyone has their own approaches but basically do not overcomplicate it. im so serious if you look at my paper I did the most basic techniques but with really good analysis and it worked really well for me. If you are ever super stumped at a text try to just understand what is this text about? and what is this question asking me to gather from this text? Just know your poetic techniques, literary techniques and your visual techniques (in case they throw you a picture but honestly the max they'll be is 3 marks so just do like salience, focal point or colour.)

REMEMBER deduct 1 from the mark of the question and thats how many quotes/techniques you want in your response as a general rule of thumb. If you get given a larger one like a 5 or 6 marker dont be afraid to go overboard too if you have the time to.

also keep track of your time consistently so that you dont realise that you spent too much time on a question. Be quick when you're answering but do NOT rush it!!! You want to ideally leave at least 5 minutes at the end after you finished the whole paper to look over your responses.

ONE MORE THING DONT START THE ESSAY FIRST AND DO SECTION 1 LAST! ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ™

(quality assurance I got 38/40 for my paper 1 trial and full marks for short answers ๐Ÿ”ฅ)

you run the risk of going overtime or just straight up ditching short answers. reality is for 97% of ppl you'll do better in short answers compared to the essay. plus another thing is that the questions can ignite some ideas for your essay too as it gets your brain going and then when you head into the essay your really into the module. (this is just what worked for me)

unless your essay quotes are in your short term and you wanna get it done first then do that but if you know your stuff already just do it in order.

I did paper 2 in order as well.

you get 10 mins of reading time to read through all the unseen texts primarily, so if you go do the essay first you'll probably have to basically read through them all again to answer the questions which takes away time
+ personally getting the short answer out of the way makes the essay less stressful since (unless you run out of time) you probably won't have to cut things down out of fear of missing other questions

if you're worried about forgetting stuff in the essay, write down your quotes or make a brief plan and then go right back to the short answers so everything's still in your brain yk
