2007 Federal Election - Coalition or Labor/Howard or Rudd?

I saw Johnny Howard on the TV on friday saying that he didnt want employees to not be compensated for the loss of award conditions such as penatly rates and overtime. This is an absolute lie. He allowed it to happen because he wanted to entice employers to employ workers on AWAs. He was...

    Subway!

As a 19yr old i got $13.80 an hour. I was on an AWA, penatly rates were traded away for a higher flat rate.

    Rudd released IR Policy

It depends on the situation. WorkChoices is very good for business but horrific and immoral for workers. Regarding industrial relations its very important to have a balanced policy. The interests for the economy (GDP, unemployment) and equity both need to be considered. Rudd's decision to...

2007 Federal Election - Coalition or Labor/Howard or Rudd?

Theres a rally from Town Hall beforehand. Obviously its very important from the union/ALP perspective for all the people who attend the concert also march in the rally.

2007 Federal Election - Coalition or Labor/Howard or Rudd?

I agree with most of you guys regarding opinion polls. The thing that frustrates me the most are huge headlines saying that Labor is in an election winning position. The election is about 6 months away, anything can happen before then. Its good to know the views of a sample of voters but...

Prison Break (For people following US tv)

For season 3 i reckon Michael is going to ask Bellick whether he told Sucre where hes keeping his girlfriend. I think Bellick said she has enough food for a couple of weeks. Then Michael and Bellick are going to break out together. I have no idea about Mahone though.

2007 Federal Election - Coalition or Labor/Howard or Rudd?

Studies show the main reason why workers join unions is that they belive they will be better off financially (due to higher wage increases, discounted or free services and goods, etc, etc), not because of ideological reasons. Obviously there are socialists who are union members but most...

2007 Federal Election - Coalition or Labor/Howard or Rudd?

I know what you mean but it doesnt add up. The manufacturing industry declined in the 70s and 80s with the reduction of tariffs. The proportion of workers in unions declined steadily throughout the 90s.

2007 Federal Election - Coalition or Labor/Howard or Rudd?

Last year at uni I learnt there are several reasons why fewer workers are joining trade unions. Heres the main ones: - growth of casual and part time work - the Wages and Prices Accord under the Hawke govt which limited wage increases - anti-union industrial relations reforms - bad image of...

2007 Federal Election - Coalition or Labor/Howard or Rudd?

Back in 2004 one of Latham's policies was the abolishment of AWAs. At that time AWAs provided a reasonable safety net, much better than what a miniumum AWA consists of today. The ALPs strong opposition to statutory individual contracts is obviously due to the fact that unions are irrelevant in a...

NSW Election - BOS Voting Intentions

Coogee and Maroubra are both Labor seats. However, basically all other beach side electorates in Sydney are now held by the Libs. Manly and Pittwater both changed hands from independents.

NSW Election - BOS Voting Intentions

Your right they do exist separately. The Liberal party has always been dominated by people who are economic conservatives. But today many Liberal candidates are also social conservatives. By social conservatives I imply they are against abortion, homosexuals, sex before marriage, etc and most of...

    UN envoy hits Israel 'apartheid'

There are no Jewish-only roads. The roads your thinking of were built exclusively for Israelis. Israeli Arabs whether they are Muslim, Christian, etc are free to use them.

    Call to stop Muslim immigrants

Jews were among the first Europeans to settle in Australia, except I would have thought a that the first religious building would have been a Protestant Church.

    Part Time vs. Casual

You can get different types of casual employment where the roster system is completely different. You can be 'on call' where they call you when they need you. Or you can be given a set roster like the permanent staff. I recently got a job at Coles and im starting off as a casual like most...
