How long does the exam take

hmm...if you realistically want to finish the 4u paper then doing the first 4 questions within an hour is usually a good indication...

    what does qualitively mean?

quantitatively: do a calculation qualitatively: jus keep BS-ing along...

    Tutoring?

another rant about hsc chemistry: it's so watered down that any help you get from a mentor can't be exactly called "tutoring"; i'd rather call it spoonfeeding.... cbfed reading conq chem by yourself? get a "tutor" to read it to you...

    Money spent on tuition

but then again we can't blame parents for wasting money on misguided tuition; being able to buy your kid a better mark is quite an attractive option

    "making up" geo theorems

the pt of intersection of angle bisectors is called the 'incentre', it's the centre of the 'incircle', or the circle that has the 3 sides of the triangle as tangents. If you inscribe a circle in a triangle (i.e. put a circle inside a triangle), and connect the centre of circle to the vertices...

    HSC Tips - Complex Numbers

humph....funny, i thought it's usually the other way round... i know how to solve complex numbers questions using circular geometry... and ok, keep the personal stuff out of the tips pages... the long list of sticky threads is already pissin me off btw KeypadSDM, u've reason to be happy...

    Ruse

but its amazing what 6 years at ruse can do to u.... one of the main things is forgetting what ppl in the real world are like i guess one main factor is the competitive environment...with so many other so-called-smart ppl around, u don't want to be seen as stupid... i think most ppl are...

    umat

rule of thumb: write down everything that you want to talk about. and if u want to get into med, be smart enough to keep a copy of the CV u send in, so you remember what you wrote down. it is several months between handing in CV and interviewing, and you'd be amazed how much you can forget...

    Ezy concentration Q (Prelim)

    express conc's in molar (moles/litre) unless stated otherwise molar mass: MM(NaOH) = 22.99 + 16.00 + 1.008 = 40.00 g/mol amount: n(NaOH) = 5.0/40.00 = 0.125 mol volume of solution: V = 0.200 L conc: [NaOH] = 0.125 / 0.200 = 0.625M (i.e. 0.625mol/L) more correctly: [NaOH] = 0.63M (2 sig figs)

    All-Rounders...

yea, got it for olympiads stuff the glass trophy thing is in february (i was spared from the 4 hr madness by not bein there), and the money prize thing is sometime mid-next year, given by your beloved local MP (dun bother asking the MP why u got it for, chances are he/she doesn't know either)...
  11. S

    All-Rounders...

not all all-rounders are eligible. only some are (and for our year even the ppl who got prizes had no idea why they got it and why their other all-rounder friends didn't)

    Top 120 Schools 2003

hmm...okay so our year was the worst in a while: 2001: 9 uai100's 2002: 3 uai100's 2003: 7 uai100's hmm.... and yes phenol, there are some smart cookies in jr, but quite rare (i would consider an average of about 3-4 a year..?) and sometimes u can't really tell cos sometimes those smart...

    dot point blues

positive charge = excess of electrons?? anyway here's a post-HSC level explanation...that HSC ppl aren't meant to know, but it's nice to know... anyway...yea it is all about electronegativity, but not directly. When oxides react with water, they are 'hydrated' (e.g. CO2 + H2O -> H2CO3...

    Turning point questions!!

imho, the massive differentiation is to tell your teacher you know what you're doing, but in practice you can '*usually* work out where the turning points are by using graphing techniques. e.g. y=(4x^2 - 1)^4 first consider the graph y = 4x^2 - 1 4 regions of interest: x < -1, -1 < x < 0...

Polar form of a complex number

never seen J before....it must be dodgy usually its n e Z (Z is the set of all integers). If so, the +/- is redundant because Z includes negative integers anyway. more appropriately n e N (N is the set of positive (or non-negative?) integers ("natural numbers"))

    Is this fair?

the diff between macq and unsw actuarial studies is: macq has its n year history of 'excellence' unsw you have friends
  17. S

    Is this fair?

well its sorta like this, in mathematical terms maths is scaled well everything else is scaled crap so with maths, there's a ceiling but with everything else there's no floor so gettin better marks when the deviation is low and gettin crapper marks when the deviation is high, is not...

    Extension II Marks

umm always thought that ppl who did philosophy, P.E. and mod greek did those subjects to get away from maths...? :p
  19. S

    Easy qn

in fact i remember chucking a fuss about it in jr high. cos the teacher taught that sqrt(n) meant the number(s) that when squared would give the number n. So to answer sqrt(4) i'd say +/-2. But then *NO*, the teacher says it's only the positive value, and i ask why, and he goes cos there's no...

    Heat of Combustion of Ethanol

just to clear up, 'enthalpy' is heat lost or gained in a process kept at constant pressure (which is the case in nearly all of class lab experiments). So in HSC levels, 'enthalpy' and 'heat' may be used in the same way. some things are not constant pressure. for example, igniting petrol in...
