    conventions for crime fiction?

There are crime fiction study guides out there too- if you have a Five Senses near you they sell two pretty good ones (some others sell them too- they're made by Five Senses though- they're thin but packed with info)

    tips for '04's?

I wrote mine in a 3 week period, but I had the story in my head from January... Don't write it in 3 weeks! It made for all sorts of funky grammatical errors because I was tired and didn't notice them. Get into your character's heads- then you have "greater insight" or stuff like that...

    story names

You can name it "untitled" although apparently that's starting to get a bit old. I named mine the day before I handed it in. I called it "Abstract Entity" because screwed if anyone knows what was going on in my main character's head!

    Whats ur short story about?

well I got great marks for mine last year... they like death and tragedy and crap. My story is about this girl who is sitting all alone and is dwelling on her sad life, watching her friends who now hate her win a race she should have been in. Then she goes and talks to them, they discover...

does the word limit include the reflection statement?

yep that's right. But in each you can go 10% over or under... better if you don't, but you won't be penalised if you do.

    Classical Greek

It's the best scaler in the HSC- especially if you do 3u (I study it at uni... oimoi talina!)

can someone tell me how to say

I think it's "wo sind meine Unterhosen?" I think Unterhosen is a plural, like Hosen and underpants in English. Geez you people are strange? (But then again, after one semester of Ancient Greek, I can tell you how to say "I am holding a penis in my right hand"... don't ask.)

which level of deutsch do you do?

3u German is crazy... I did it last year. But you feel good walking out of that exam at the end, and it really helps with continuers! Is it on the last day of the HSC like last year? Man, that sucked!

    ARGH! Genders

Unfortunately it's one of those things you just have to remember. Sometimes there's patterns, sometimes not. Don't try to fool the examiners in the spoken outside of school (for me, it was Parramatta High). They know, believe me, they know. (Oh and just to make you feel better, after...

    The Problem of Pamela Bradley

Pamela Bradley. You either love her, or love to hate her. So what's the deal with her? You must not quote her. She's OK if you either don't get it or need a summary if you do get it. If you want above a band 4 you need to get some other sources, and quote/ paraphrase from them. For...

    who here makes up sources/quotes?

don't do it, if anyone still does it (which I'm sure they do). Teachers aren't as dumb as we make them out to be (as you discover when you finish the HSC and suddenly they're trying to be your friend...). But what you can do, if you remember roughly what someone said, is say "Herodotos...

    Evidence for Roman Society!

most people when they look at ancient sources only look at what the person (e.g. Tacitus) was telling you literally. You have to read between the lines because they aren't writing for an HSC student, even if their work claims to be "a possession for all time" (Thucydides).

Anbody else in love with the personality they're studying?

I thought Caesar was an egomaniac who basically got to the top and didn't know what to do next... so he dared the senators to kill him... and they did. Funy how things work like that. :S

    dropping ancient..

Ancient generally scales up compared to other subjects. It's recognised by the Board of Studies as an intellectually challenging subject* (which is the most important criteria when working out how to scale) and therefore is more likely to scale up. (* They work this out by comparing...

Any notes on Julius Caesar/ Fall of Rome (Pompey)

Have a look at the question in the 2003 HSC on Pompey or Crassus (I actually did that question in my HSC!) If you need tutoring drop me a line! (I'm trying to save up for a summer school ancient history course... my email is asta8216@mail.usyd.edu.au)

    Ancient History 2000

don't look at the papers before 2001... they were in the old syllabus and they're not only harder but they're also very different from the way it's done now. Get questions from other places if you've done 2001-3...

    Seen Troy?

I've heard people say it was a real representation of the time period written about by Homer... don't make me laugh! Homer didn't write about a time period, he wrote about a myth that was edited from 1200BC to approximately 700BC. Therefore it was a representation of all those times, but no...
