    Semester I Chatter Thread (2007)

Re: Semester I 2007 - Chatter Thread! Am I alone in not minding Carslaw? It's sort of bleakly attractive from the inside, especially when it's raining.

    Typical length of an essay?

Shouldn't the length they want be in the course outline, if it's an assessment task?

    Semester I Chatter Thread (2007)

Re: Semester I 2007 - Chatter Thread! He's doing the same no-reader no-printed-outline thing in HSTY1022 as well. He's only giving us the primary sources for the tutes (well, by 'giving' I mean 'putting online without explanatory notes'), and we have to get the core secondary sources from...

    Semester I Chatter Thread (2007)

Re: Semester I 2007 - Chatter Thread! For some reason one of the lecturers at the ancient history lecture today was giving out vouchers for free coffee at Ralph's. Are they enlisting academic staff for their promotional campaigns? Is a lecturer's pay that bad? (I managed to pick up three...

Re: Semester I 2007 - Chatter Thread! Resolution: work. But as if that'll ever happen.

Plan to 'name and shame' domestic violence perpetrators

More prescriptive laws with regard to sentencing, though, tend to be made by politicians who are more interested in appearing tough on crime than in allowing sentencing to look at subtleties. A judge who is familiar with facts of the specific case is better qualified to decide a sentence than a...

    Copy centre

Don't know about the prices, but it's running. It's on the level of Wentworth you enter on if you go in over the footbridge.

Plan to 'name and shame' domestic violence perpetrators

It's an attempt by Iemma to look tough on crime in the context of a state election campaign. Law and order auction, etc. One of the things that depresses me most about state politics is that significant pieces of our legal system - right of defendants to cross-examine their accusers...

2007 Federal Election - Coalition or Labor/Howard or Rudd?

The only reason Campbell went was because Howard asked him to sacrifice his career so they could continue a cheap political attack. I think it's perfectly clear that he didn't do it because he felt that he was in any way compromised just by meeting with Burke. Meeting with a person, when his...

    Philosophy?

That might be the PhB, which is not about what we now refer to as philosophy but is simply a heavily research-based undergraduate degree in any subject. It's parallel to a PhD (doctor of philosophy), which is not about what we now know as philosophy but is simply a research-based postgrad...

    How was your first day?

I feel your pain, brother. Public transport with junior high schoolers is a nightmare. I'm thinking I might actually skip a train and get home 30 minutes to an hour later just so I can avoid the noise. (I can't cope with it in the afternoons, especially when I've had to get up early.) What's...

    Arts Psych major...what else

Nope. Sixty is the maximum number of cp from Table B, but you don't have to do any if you don't want to. I suppose that'd depend on how well you want the particular degree to suit you for a particular career, but I don't see anything wrong with doing stuff outside the main thrust of your...

    Buildings

Can anyone tell me where the Quad Greek Room is? I got a sheet with directions to the main rooms in the Quad on Arty Starty Day and tried to find it during O-week, but following the instructions only got me to the Great Hall anteroom, which I don't think is quite the same.

TC is the Old Teachers College, I think - just next to the Education building.

    Arts Psych major...what else

I think it's a maximum of 60cp (10 courses) from outside the faculty, including a maximum 12cp (2 courses) of junior units. So you can do as many as 48cp (8 courses) of intermediate and senior units, which is enough to complete a major and probably qualify for entry to honours.

    Arts Psych major...what else

There's plenty of choice. Pick a couple of subjects that you'd be interested in and give them a go. (Bear in mind also that up to a quarter of your first-year units can be from outside the Arts faculty, so you could do government and international relations, marketing, a science, etc.)

Best+Worst of Teacher Quotes and Habits

English teacher: "Macbeth is written in Shakespearian language." A different English teacher's stock line for people chewing gum: "Stop masticating at the back!" Yet another English teacher, to someone talking incessantly: "Stand up and hold your tongue!" [He does so] Student: "Sir, can we...

Where did all the stalls go!

Yeah, same with me. I supported Kerry in 2004 (despite him being a flawed candidate) and I think David Hicks is probably getting a raw deal, but that doesn't mean I want to be constantly harangued about it and how it means the world is collapsing. And it also irritates me that they think that...

Where did all the stalls go!

I think they like Chavez more than Castro now. I certainly saw dear Hugo on posters around and about, but no sign of Fidel - maybe because Castro's on his deathbed while Chavez is a young up-and-comer who shows how 'socialism of the 21st century' can work. It's so easy! You simply posture a lot...
