Not all hydrocarbons are gases. Petrol is a mixture of alkanes (mainly octane), so there's your liquid fossil fuel. As for solid fossil fuel, pure coal is about 95% carbon, with a few impurities like sulfur. However, I'm pretty sure good old C will do for coal. I_F
