    gross world product & PPP

I don't think you have to go into the nuances of PPP - just know what it is (an adjustment for the buying power of the currency in each particular country). It's not mentioned in the syllabus, and it's only briefly mentioned in Leading Edge with the stuff on GNI. :) I_F

    A Pattern Problem

SonyHK's correct. Each of the numbers from 89 down around to 173 multiply by 3 and add 1 to get the number opposite to them in the circle. Therefore the missing number is 757. For future reference, this type of question should be in the Appreciating the Beauty and Elegance of Maths forum. :) I_F

    2u Mathematics Marathon v1.0

Soulsearcher, you're not quite right. But since the question was a little badly worded, that's OK. :p Next question: Find the exact length of the line from the point (2,7) to the centre of the circle x2 + 4x + y2 - 6y - 3 = 0 I_F

    Strange question

You want to buy about a billion smoke detectors? Go ahead - they only contain a tiny, tiny amount of americium-241 (we're talking small portions of a gram, I believe). But if you get enough of them, americium is a strong gamma emitter in gram quantities, so you'd have some power. I_F

If UAI is a rank, does the average person get a 50 then?

Once the marks out of 500 are found (total of the scaled marks in best 10 units), the top set of marks receives a UAI of 100, the next set get 99.95, etc. So I think a different number of people can get each rank - it depends on their aggregate scaled marks. I_F

    ethanol as a fuel...(urgent!!!)

Please tell, why is the phrase "officially abandoned" incorrect? As far as I know, Brazil tried to adopt ethanol as their sole fuel, but it didn't work out, and they returned to shipping petrol. It doesn't mean they dissembled their ethanol production or distribution facilities, but they...

    ethanol as a fuel...(urgent!!!)

I see no reason why facts from the 1970's and 1980's should be reported incorrectly in Conquering Chem. The Brazil experiment - the attempt to adopt ethanol as a sole fuel, failed, and petrol was reintroduced. However, Brazil maintained its extensive ethanol production facilities and transport...

    Petrol....(urgent!!!)

Petrol is composed of short-chain hydrocarbons (mainly octane, C8H18), and is produced from crude oil, a fossil fuel which is non-renewable. Ethanol is an alkanol, C2H5OH, and contains oxygen (which petrol does not) and can be produced through the fermentation of sugars, making it a renewable...

    weighing machine on another planet?

You're confusing mass with weight. An object's mass is the amount of material it contains, and is measured in kilograms, grams, etc. However, an object's weight is the force exerted on it due to its position in a gravitational field. Weight is measured in newtons. For example, on the Earth's...

Help with finding a good laptop for uni!

I would recommend spending a little more money for a Pentium-M processor and at least 512MB of RAM. At $1999 or so, you should be able to get a 1.8Ghz processor, maybe better. :) I_F

Help with finding a good laptop for uni!

If you want Vista compatible in a laptop, wait till October when Intel's 64-bit dual core laptop chips come out. It's not worth buying a laptop now for Vista - it'll be 6 months old by the time Vista comes out, and the specs you need mean you need to spend $2500+ at least. And when Vista does...
