I meant Sydney as in 'all of Sydney' - parra, western sydney etc etc.
It's also true that a majority of graduates want to work in inner Sydney not in an out of the way suburb.
Hey parra isnt out of the way :(

true:)... uts/usyd/unsw are more central i guess since they're in the city but uws n mac n acu are probably easier and lessout of the way to get to for a lot of people... i doubt there's a huge population of students who lived in the city CBD before they started uni whereas there's probably a lot who live out parra or strathfield or epping direction

Id have to say, i would disagree with Cape on the hawkesbury bit. Yes it is a nice peaceful place but travelling is a real bastard and the train times are stupid. Cmon Cape, you know you wanna admit it. U dont exactly enjoy the train rides...or do u?:p
You know I love sitting on a train for like 6 hours each day  I don't think I could think of anything more exciting to do each day. Thats why, if you saw me in class, I was always asleep :p
Anyway, because you do cultural heritage, you don't notice it, but because I do environmental management, Hawkesbury campus is the best one to go to, we go outside and walk around in the paddocks to do experiments, yay! how fun!

In response to Cape's comment:

" Because the courses at Hawkesbury are all animal science, agricultural and environmental. There is no way that what is taught on the Hawkesbury campus could be taught in the middle of Sydney. "

Actually I do Forensic Science at Hawkesbury, which is also taught at UTS...

In support of UWS on this one, the course at hawkesbury is much more hands-on than the sydney course and is also multi-disciplinary. it is programmed this way in order to give UWS students a wider knowledge of the field and hence more employment prospectives.

as an alternative example to law, i personally, as well as the staff (including a lecturer who used to work for the federal police) think the uws course is the better one to be doing...
Sorry, I forgot about Forensics. They have a crime house, which is really cool :uhhuh:

No I don't feel disadvantaged at UWS nor do i regret going there I love UWS its so relaxing, it rocks, its close to home, it offered me the subject i wanted , its hands on and im getting support for my disability what more could i ask for?

as for 'prestige' universities i hear my grandparents go on and on about how smart my cousins are because they did there studies at UNSW/USYD and how I'll never measure up to them because uws is not one of them.

thats not true it doesn't matter where or what university you go to any uni is good enough its better than nothing at all. as long there is a course you want to do to help achieve your future as aspirations and you a comfortable with it is what counts.

I would just point out that by going to UWS you will not be disadvantaged by going there if you feel that the course and what it offers is what you need and require for your future career. I feel that because students who do make the sandstone universities are in a secure line and it is this where then they start to make accusations that UWS isn't a good University; simply because they know, "I am at USYD, UTS". Honestly, being able to gain a place to study at USYD, UNSW or UTS doesn't guarantee that you will work well and succeed in University. That is why Careers Day and Open Days are set up to show you what each University offers and you choose the one which best suits you. For example, you pick B. I.T because it is a Schloarship and its strong links with the I.T industry. I would say however, there are some areas which disadvantage UWS such as its location, courses or facitilies (in some areas). But I would not say it's a bad University.

UNSW, UTS, USYD, it is not because of it's name, it is because these universities have built up a great reputation because of their courses. This is why many students prefer these Universities because of the courses they offer, word of mouth (because their families went there) and this is why then they refer to these Universities as better ones. Honestly, pick a University or Insitution which suits you the best. Honestly, we keep saying that we would rather pick UTS, UNSW, USYD but you really need to ask yourself how these Universities compare with International universities? I can say that the area of Design is not much embraced and it should be much greater; I like Monash because it has established design courses whilst the Uni has ties with European countries. Since I am interested in Design, I would prefer studying at Monash, Central St. Martins (London) or even Hyperlsland School of Design in Sweden. All in all, each University has its disadvantage. But you choose the one you want because you think you will get the most out of it.

UWS has more disadvantages than most. But, in all fairness, taking into account how long they have been established, its location, and the general talent they can attract, they've done pretty well. Still, would've been better off if it was called Chifley Uni.

Instead of wasting your time to argue 'bout how bad/good UWS is, why not learning harder, top your course, get a better job than those from Usyd & UNSW ?
Man, now I know why...

Chifley Uni sounds better, it certainly provokes a better image than uws.
I believe the NSW state Liberal government at the time put an end to that idea since Chifley was a Labor PM.

wiki said:
More than 30 years after his death, Chifley's name still aroused partisan passions. In 1987 the New South Wales Labor government decided to name the planned new university in Sydney's western suburbs Chifley University. When, in 1989 a new Liberal government renamed it the University of Western Sydney, controversy broke out. According to a debate on the topic, held in 1997 after the Labour party had regained government, the decision to rename Chifley University reflected a desire to attach the term of Western Sydney to institutions of lasting significance, and that the idea ultimately received the support of Bob Carr, later the Premier of New South Wales.

I think that if you're questioning it, you know that UWS isn't comparable to UNSW or USYD.

People can choose whereever they want to go - but unfortunately, UWS is really an unliked and unrespected University.

I dont know what a Medicine Degree will be worth from UWS.
you're a fucking idiot, all medical degrees get you the same thing, a job. Med has 100% employment rate, so rep of uni doesn't come into play here in australia.

natstar, y do we need to experience uws to say its worse than other unis? do i need to go to africa and live in a remote village that lacks food and water for a year to come to the conclusion that the quality of life there isn't quite as good as Australia?

You cant compare a country to a uni. If you have not experienced what a certain uni has to offer, you can only base your assumptions on hearsay. No one has said its better than other Sydney uni's btw.

Of course no one has said uws is better than other sydney unis. No one's that stupid. Everyone knows that MACQ/UTS/USYD/UNSW is better than UWS. Whatever UWS can do, one of those other unis can do better. And in most areas, they can do it a lot better.

I can't believe you don't want to transfer natstar. You said you had the opportunity to. I'm perplexed by your reluctance to let go of UWS =/ Even if you feel UWS is good for you, you could have gone to one of the other unis just to try it out?

But just think how the other Doctors are going to rib a UWS graduate. And imagine how difficult it is going to be to get a specialisation when it's all an old boys network.

As someone who has attended UWS for a while, I can say with experience it's not great. That being said I did have some fantastic lecturers and tutors. But, administratively, they're screwed.
