you know how marks are aligned and then scaled again?

would it be better to say, get 99 in 2U as your hsc mark, or to get say 90 in 4U?

If you get 90% in 4u, scaled HSC mark that is, you're looking at around 50% raw mark for 4u, where as 2u, you're looking at much more competition thus u probably need the 80s+.

then why wouldnt all the smartish 4u people do 2u and 3u instead?
It's because if you do well in Maths, you're better off getting 4 units of pretty good scores as opposed to just 3 units of crash hot scores...

e.g. Suppose a student gets 98 in 2 unit and 95 in Ext1, and then gets 95 in Ext2.
According to the scaled data in 2008:
98 in 2 unit = scaled mark of 94.2
95 in Ext1 = scaled mark of 94.8
95 in Ext2 = scaled mark of 97.2

Note that 1 unit courses have a maximum aggregate of 50 and 2 unit courses have a maximum aggregate of 100.

If this person stuck with 3 units of Maths:
Total maths scaled marks = 94.2 + 47.4 = 141.6 (out of 150)
Average maths scaled mark (per unit) = 141.6/3 = 47.2 per unit

If this person stuck with 4 units of Maths:
Total maths scaled marks = 94.8 + 97.2 = 192.0 (out of 200)
Average maths scaled mark (per unit) = 192/4 = 48.0 per unit

Hence in this scenario, the student was better off taking Ext2 Maths...

I have just received my Maths half yearly back. I ranked 2nd place in 2 unit and 3rd place in 3 unit, 98% in 2 unit and 95% in 3 unit.

My school accepts around 60 students in 4 unit every year. I want to do 4 unit, I like Maths and stuff, but I'm not too sure because apparently you have to drop 2 unit Maths to do it. As you can see, I'm much better in 2unit maths than 3 unit. Should I do it?

You don't 'drop' 2 unit in the usual sense. You still go to class, and do the work, but 2 unit doesn't appear on your Record of Subjects after the HSC. This is because, once you pick up 4 unit, 3u turns into a subject worth 2 units and 4u is worth 2 units as well. As a result, you will get a mark out of 100 for 3u and 4u.
Depending on your school, you may still be required to take the 2u assessment tasks, just incase you drop. When I accelerated, I had to do the year 12 2u, 3u, and 4u tasks, as well as the year 11 2u and 3u tasks just incase I dropped.

Looking at those marks, there is no reason not to do it.

You should definitely do it! There are really two main reasons, firstly, you clearly are really good at maths, secondly, 4 unit will provide you more of a challenge, it will be more interesting.

Also, a mark in the high 80s/ low 90s for extension 2 is like the equivalent of top 90s (like 98/99/100) in 2unit.

So you cant really say you are better at Mx1 than maths 2 unit mark wise because its like comparing apples and oranges.

But in conclusion, DO IT!

Thanks guys. I think I'll try it. Yeah, my school makes us do 2unit assessments in Term 4, so basically I have one term to decide whether I want to keep it or not.

You spelled your surname wrong. It ends with a 'y' and not an 'i'.

Some people may perform extremely well in 3 unit yet do badly in 4 unit. Is 4 unit something entirely different from 3 unit?
