SWIMMING legend Dawn Fraser was abused by a cleaner who allegedly threatened to return to her home with 20 friends after an argument over a noisy vacuum cleaner.

Police were called to Ms Fraser's Balmain home early yesterday after the Olympic great became embroiled in an argument with a male cleaner across the road from her home who had woken her sick four-year-old grandson.

Ms Fraser, who has been bedridden with back pain, said she approached the man at 6.40am - 10 minutes before sunrise - to ask him to stop using a vacuum cleaner until at least 7am.

She alleges he turned on her and began swearing.

"It was quite shocking for me," Ms Fraser told The Daily Telegraph.

"He started swearing at me and I came inside and rang the environmental department and found he (could not start until) 7am."

Ms Fraser said her daughter Dawn-Lorraine then went to speak to him.

"He was verbally abusing her and intimidating her and threatening her. It wasn't necessary," she said.

"He started going off, saying 'I'm going to get my Lebanese mates to come and sort you out'."

Ms Fraser said she was stunned by the man's sudden burst of anger.

"I know he has a job to do but let's do it at a reasonable time. I just wanted him to stop until my grandson woke up. He had a very short fuse."

The cleaner also turned on a female neighbour, allegedly abusing her in Arabic before police arrived.

Dawn-Lorraine told The Daily Telegraph she held genuine fears the cleaner would return and follow through with his threat.

The single mother said the ordeal terrified her and her mother.

"Mum's sick, my son's sick. All she did was come out to ask him to stop because it wasn't 7 o'clock yet," Dawn-Lorraine said.

Choking back tears, Dawn-Lorraine said she was frightened by the man.

"You don't know what they are capable of," she said.

"The policeman said to me, 'Were you scared?' and I said, 'Yes.'

"I tried to be tough in front of him, but he knows where I live, he could get 20 blokes around here.

"I don't know whether he recognised mum or not, but he will now."

The cleaner, who works for contracting company 2Fresh, yesterday refused to comment. He was later questioned at Balmain police station and gave a formal statement.

Sergeant Rob Gallagher said police were investigating a confrontation involving Ms Fraser, her daughter and a male cleaning contractor following a noise complaint.

"We are looking at all the persons involved," Sgt Gallagher said.

"Once we obtain information from all witnesses we will make a decision about where the investigation will go."
