Re: Ursula Hall

Having lived there last year I'd say it's like any college - it depends on you as to what your experience of college life is like. As a smaller college you know everyone and therefore there's always someone, somewhere willing to hang out with you. Even if nothing is "organised" most weekends will find a random corridor filled with random people, generally embarking on some random randomness (please note the "organised" Random Tuesdays/Wednesdays are a world unto their own).

In conclusion, yay Ursies .. Despite the fact I moved out after a year, haha.

The head of ursies left, so the head of bruce now looks after both places.

Re: Ursula Hall

I've been at Ursies for 2 years now. 1st year was pretty gay in some ways. Definitely felt like the nerdy rep was deserved, but this year has been a blast - we got 120 new people (out of 200) and the atmosphere is just a whole lot better.

That said, for both years I was never left with a lack of partying or socialising. Both years were great. You've got at least one group of people going out everyday except mondays and tuesdays generally.

The price sucks though. At Bruce and Ursies it will be 270$ next year.

Re: Ursula Hall

well bruce will still be $15 more a week than johns next year. not that bruce isn't easily worth that extra $15, but still. that's 15 drinks at hour of power.

Putting in Ursula as my first choice. I heard it's pretty quiet and nerdy... but then again, so am I to a large extent. I felt like I'd fit best there.
Second choice would be Bruce.
What have other potential 08 students applied for?

Re: Ursula Hall

I posted a nice reply the other day, but it seems to have been lost... bummer, that.

The sum up what I would have said (just imagine better, more thorough, etc ;))...

The Ursies reps are funny things. There's two basic reps, that we are the quiet academic college, and that we are totally anti-social funny looking people. One is justified (Ursies consistently gets more HD's per capita than any other ANU college), the other isn't really, though I suspect I know where it comes from.

There are two things to remember when someone from another college says Ursies is anti-social. The first is that Ursies is the smallest, so it means that when we go out, there obviously aren't as many of us out there as there are from other colleges. I mean, if 50% of Ursies goes out, that's 100 people. If 50% of Fenner goes out, that's like 300 people. So Ursies looks like no one has shown up. The other thing is that Ursies has more social events on it's calendar than any other college. We're doing something most days, generally with 2 or 3 big events per week. Our URC (rep counsel) is amazing - I reckon if anyone suggested we need more social events, they'd just ask that person for ideas and have that event happening within a week. I've seen people's suggestions get carried through that quickly. But since there's so much happening at Ursies, when it comes to interhall events, we're all pretty much exhausted from our own stuff, so not that many people go. Sure, there'll be some people at every event, but not that many compared to the other colleges. Hence the rep - they think that just because we don't go to interhall as much, we must be studying all the time. We go out, just not so much with the other colleges. But you can - just because you live at Ursies don't mean you can't go to interhall, it just means you'll be one of about 40, rather than about 80 like the other colleges.

So yeah, Ursies is good. If you want a rep for the sake of a rep, don't come here, we don't have one. If you want to live at the best college at ANU, then come here. Of course, everyone thinks they live in the best college, so I'll probably get my head ripped off for that remark. You'll have a good time wherever you go, so work out which one suits you. Oh, but if you want to eat, come to Ursies. You might survive at Bruce, but at Burgman or Johns your dinner will end up in the bin most nights. Ursies has the best quality food.

I'll just add though, this Little Bruce thing is silly. Yeah, I oppose the shared head of hall like everyone else, though we as ressies got it changed to a shared head of hall and out own dean (atm we have a head and a dean in the one person), but really. We're still Ursies. And if you want to name based on who is the head, why isn't B&G get called New Ursies? Since that's where Keith, our current head, is going. It's not our head who's leaving, it's B&G's.

Anyway.

Re: Ursula Hall

Yup, that's another thing we sell ourselves with.

In fact, we claim a lot of top positions. Cleanest, best maintenance, best food, most events, tightest community, most HD's, most storage space, blah blah blah. But I'm pretty sure they're all true, too! ;)

Whatever though, all the colleges are good enough.

Oh shush Ursinians. I'm looking forward to coming into your quad in O-week, planting a dragon flag and then busting out the Ride of the Valkyries on a boombox.

UniLodge vs Residences

I know there are a few other topics weighing up the various pros and cons of ANU accomodation but I am wondering specifically if anyone has any insight into the new UniLodge?
I like the idea of actually sharing an apartment with other people which is what UniLodge offers but I would still like to experience the "traditional" residential life.
What would be the best place for me? I'm 18, quite social and like going out but I'm not an extreme partier. I'm hoping to do Arts/Law or just straight Arts.
Any tips or ideas? UniLodge or residences? If residence which one?

Applying For Accomodation! Must Know!

Step 1 - Decide which Student Residence you prefer.
For undergraduates! - Decide if you want to cook or not!

self catered;
*B&G (Burton and Garran)
*Fenner (is off campus but there’s a bus that
arrives every 30min to take you to and from uni)
*UniLodge

catered (in no order);
*Johns (John XXIII College)
*Ursies (Ursula hall)
*Burgmann
*Bruce [hall]

(Each hall has its own “stereo type” which you’ll probably read about here on the forums. I reckon you’ll probably have a great experience at any of them.)

Make a list of your top 4 preferences!

Complete the online registration form! http://asp.anu.edu.au/NewApp.asp

** - remember you apply *before* you have been given an offer into ANU.
** - It's free! - and if you don't come to ANU - they don't charge you for your application - so do it!

******* Some halls/colleges have interviews (even in December!)- apply now! yes right now!

Note - New Undergraduate Domestic students
* To be guaranteed accommodation, students must register for accommodation by 17th January 2008 and must receive an academic offer no later than 17th January 2008.
* UAC main round offers are released on 17th January 2008. Students receiving later offers will be offered accommodation subject to availability.
* Accommodation offers will sent via email after 17th January 2008 .
* Offers for confirmed deferred students will start being sent from December.

Note - New Undergraduate International students
* To be guaranteed accommodation, students must accept their academic offer and register for accommodation by 17th January 2008.
* Accommodation offers will begin in November and will be sent via email to students as they accept their academic offers.

Re: UniLodge vs Residences

from what i hear, unilodge lacks the "ressies experience"
you still meet people but there's less of the organised fun (less/no sports teams, minimal social events etc)
if youre an arts/law kid i'd suggest burgie or johns everyone there does arts/law

Re: UniLodge vs Residences

If I get into ANU for next year, I'll be staying at UniLodge in my own room. I still plan to party and stuff, I just really need my space. Not that student accommodation is known for it's spaciousness.

Re: UniLodge vs Residences

Really? Shit. Were they all just instances of burnt toast or is UniLodge just highly flammable? And how does evacuation work?
