NBN just had a update. My guess is he is most likely he has died. They say the Papacy will give a statement in a 2 to 3 hours time, as it is 4 am there.

a) Yes the Pope can retire, but this would not happen if the Pope had full mental capacity in which to carry out his duties.

b) Praying for the Pope's recovery is not foolish. After all, if there's one thing that can prompt a miracle it's the prayers of 1 billion Catholics - but only when their prayers are in accordance with the will of the Holy Spirit.

c) The Pope is not yet dead. I've been watching the reports all morning, and there has been a LOT of (presumably unintended) misinformation floating around. When he's dead, we'll know.

I've just been updating the major local and international news services. The Australian, the SMH, BBC etc.

A lot of people interviewed on Sky News seem to be praying for a peaceful and painless death rather than for a recovery, at this point. ('Passing' is actually the word they're using, but I have a deep seated hatred of alliteraton.)

Fox News is doing continuous live coverage, if you have Foxtel and want instant updates.

Its obvious he is going die. Why do you feel the need to find out the exact moment when its announced? It seems a little over the top.

learn something new everyday though I do think that the key is the last part of the sentence.

Kind of like a Catholic priest who quits the priesthood. They are still a priest (with regards to absolution, transubstantiation etc) as vows like that cant really be broken therefore the Pope is the Pope until he dies as there can only be one Bishop of Rome...its really a case of 6 of one and half a dozen of the other if you think about it

the antipopes were a long while back and they couldnt decide amongst themselves who was and who wasnt! (would have been like a group of 5 year olds arguing over who is the boss!)

Either way, its a sad time for Catholics worldwide and people should hae a little more respect...

My dad was a priest. He applied to Rome to leave the priesthood and left. He got a confirmation letter back about 10 years later. So he is officially not a priest in any sense. Whether this is typical or not im not sure.. but there are definately avenues to officially sever ones ties with the priesthood.

you misssed my point.
He may have left the priesthood but he still has the "ability" (bad choice of words but) to perform certain rituals (like the ones I listed) if he chose to (which Im guessing he wouldnt as it would invalidate the reasons ofr leaving)
