Re: Belonging - Romulu, My Father Question

Bees?
There is the symbolism of the rabbit (birth and rewnewing) when Raimond has his ephiny about how Australia isn't that bad. Page 60-61

the bees can also symbolise Romulus's generosity since he cares for them even though they are the tiniest, insignicant creatures.

Re: Romulus My Father. Written Techniques

indeed
Gaita uses all the techniques that most writers use.
ie, metaphor, simile, personification, juxtaposition, etc
they aren't hard to find in the book

Re: Romulus My Father. Written Techniques

He uses a hell of a lot of descriptive language, metaphors, symbolism (especially the tree at the start of the book) and personification.
I found the descriptive language one of the most effective techniques.
Metaphors and symbolism are also highly important.

I thought the Bee was a reference to scene at the beginng of the movie. It's symbolic for life as Romulus brings the bees to life, and alludes to a brand new beginng.

Yea i know, i dont get how it relates to belonging, i dont get the whole movie of how it relates to belonging.

I think the bees symbolise redemption and hope. I can't find the correct section in the book but in the movie it seems related to Raimond's upbringing. Despite all of the tragedies he goes through, and the outlook we expect he would have he still succeeds in life. Like how Romulus 'resurrects' the bees with light Raimond can continue living and appreciating life because of the relationship he shares with his father. This bond remains Raimonds leaning post, a symbol of redemption and hope, a light at the end of the tunnel kind of thing that carries him through great suffering.
Thats fantastic, but how does it relate to beloning?

Re: Poem linking to Romulus, My Father

HI, i dont know if im late but...

Bruce Dawe's poem"The Family Man" is about the father/persona who commits suicide because he choses not to belong. The cost of his superficial sense of belonging puts all he has to waste.

It's a pretty short poem, so check it out : )

I found a really great study manual written in 2008 for this year's coming HSC. In the area of Belonging. It is really detailed.

Written by G. Hooper, some experienced teacher.

I really liked how many resources it had. I have to go read them but I don't have to try and think of a million things.

It didn't have a timeline, but it does summarise the plot.

It also has a glossary, background notes, exam style question (with guide on how to answer), area of study notes and references. (You can probably tell I'm writing whats on the front, I just skimmed the summary and the background. I'll read the rest if I have to later.)

So if anyone out there has to study this book (NOT MOVIE) then they shoudl look at this studyguide. It's cool. I put the webaddress on the trackbacks thing. But in case it doesn't come up the address was :
www.nisi.com.au ;)

'Romulus, My Father' Question

Gaita's philosophical reflection on personality and character highlight attributes that are valued in relation to belonging to a society. How is this reflected in the characters in the memoir? Why are these two words emphasised in italics? (pg 102-104

I'm having a little trouble answering this question, especially because i can't really understand the difference, or i guess attributes, of personality and character. Can anyone help me please?

Romulus, My Father- Thesis

Hi Guy!

Sorry, I'm having a little trouble coming up with a great thesis for Romulus, My Father..! My other 2 related texts are Chocolat and an interview with Li Cunxin, author of Mao's Last Dancer.

In my Extended response, I wanted to develop a thesis about how someone's cultural or social upbringings shape and influence their perspectives and attitudes towards certain things...but I'm struggling to come up with a 1 sentence thesis which sounds good!

If anyone has any suggestions, I would be really grateful!

Thanks guys in advance=]!

Belonging - Romulus, My Father

Hey guys,

Does anyone have a "Romulus, My Father" chapter/detailed summary? I'm desperately cramming in school work before school starts and I don't exactly have the time to make a summary (loads of other work, and I've been moving house!)

It would be VERY much appreciated if someone knows of/has a summary which I could have! :)
