Subjects get scaled up or down depending on their difficulty in the HSC.

Simple way - BOS:

  • School sends in Assessment Marks and Ranks
  • Students sit the HSC in your school
  • According to marks across the state the RAW marks obtained are ALIGNED
eg. In 2003 61/100 raw in Chemistry got scaled to 79/100
  • You received the exam mark which is the same rank as your assessment rank as your new ALIGNED assessment mark.
ie. If John is coming 4th he will get the 4th best exam mark eg. 88 as his assessment mark

  • Your HSC exam mark says your own
  • Your HSC mark is an average of your aligned assessment mark and aligned exam mark
THEREFORE the marks you get in assessment don't really matter just your ranks does.

Simple way - UAC:

  • Use your raw marks (don't know if it is just your exam mark or assessment mark - but assessment mark is derived from aligned raw marks so )
  • Scale your marks according to the difficulty of the subject (becomes out of /50 now)
  • You get a aggregate out of 250, which is doubled to be out of 500.
  • Each aggregate corresponds to a UAI
  • The highest aggregates (usually around 485?? become the 99.95 ATAR and it goes down from there)
SOMEONE PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG!

Scaling
Requirements

  • A fish
  • A knife
  • 10 minutes
  • Patience
  • Prior experience

To basically scale
1) Hold the fish in a hand opposite to your righting hand
2) Hold the knife firmly in your hand
3) Proceed to scrape the fish from head to tail with your knife
4) Once completed, seek if one wants to continue to gut and eat your fish.

DO NOT EAT FISH IF IT HASN'T BEEN COOKED.

So does this mean that ur HSC mark does not really matter as much as ur rank

This is wrong.

The top exam mark becomes the top moderated assessment mark and the bottom exam mark becomes the bottom moderated assessment mark but...

those in between are adjusted according to the relative gaps between the ranks as determined by the marks sent into the BOS.

John being ranked 4th doesn't mean he will get the 4th exam mark as his moderated assessment mark but he will get a mark that reflects the gaps between three and five so...

Student 1 exam mark 98 - school mark 91
Student 2 exam mark 96 - school mark 90
Student 3 exam mark 94 - school mark 87
John exam mark 92 - school mark 72
Student 5 exam mark 76 school mark 71
Student 6 exam mark 71 - school mark 65
and so on.

To keep the relative gaps right John doesn't deserve an assessment mark of 92 as that changes the relative gap between John and the students ranked three and five. The school has the gaps at 15 between John and Student 3 and but only 1 mark ahead of Student 5. If he gets the exam mark as his assessment mark then those gaps become 2 instead of 15 and 16 instead on 1. John's assessment mark would be lowered to reflect those gaps.

Fark What happens if u bomb out considerably in the HSC
I was just wondering excuse my lack of understanding of this process.
I recieved my ranks back at end of term 3 as most did, and came:
4/28 for eco
4/81 for maths general
20/30 for ancient history
70/89 for advanced english
and 37/50 for biology.
My school is usually around the 90-110 mark in terms of rank, and i was predicted from these ranks to getan atar of around 76, which i am very dissapointed in :(.

I just want to know, i feel i have faired very well in these hSC exams, i feel very confident in scoring high band 5s or band 6es in Ancient, Eco and general maths, and maybe high band 4 to low band 5s in Bio and Eng advanced. Would anyone say that these combined could get me over 82. I would like to do economics at macquarie? Can my ranks or assessement marks be 'pulled up' by comparativley better HSC examination rresults?
Responses greatly appreciated

It's entirely possible. If you get over 80-85% raw marks for ancient, economics and general maths and 75-80% raw marks for biology and english, I think you could get 82. Maybe even 85+ if you get at least 90% raw marks in a few of your subjects.

I'm not really experienced in ATAR/UAI calculation, but it seems to me that you could acheive 82 if you went well in your HSC exams. But it also depends on how well your cohort goes too.

I got a question, I been working hard through out the year in maths and my internal mark is 85% and I'm ranked 3rd, 2% between me and first... I bombed out in that maths exam like 80+/120 raw... is there a chance of band 5? and would my internal mark go down based on my externals?

One more question lol, I'm second in chemistry, gap between me and first is like 6%,, though in the HSC i think the person coming 3rd got better than me, that is in the externals I think student 1= 94 HSC mark and Student 2(ranked 3rd): got 90 and I feel like I got somewhere in 80's, aligned that is... how would the internals work out to be?

thanks

Also: Outliers
A bottom mark that is 'too' low, compared to the rest of your school does not count. Instead, the bottom mark is adjusted based on some maths thing (too confusing to understand myself lol)
Simple way - UAC:

The highest aggregates (usually around 485?? become the 99.95 ATAR and it goes down from there)
Raw exam marks, moderated assessment marks.
Remember for school marks, they are moderated THEN aligned
The BoS sends in the moderated assessment marks to UAC before they align it

I reckon so, hopefully they will. I think you'll also be eligible for 3 -4 automatic extra atar points for economics at macquarie through "Academic Advantage" (1 or 2 for English, 2 for Eco)
