I would predict that he would say that returning officer is worse because you get a lot of crap but don't get much else out of it.
I spoke to him a bit during the election, the advice I gave him was to ignore all those overtly hostile people who made all those threats and got really angry. He acted in line with that advice, as I noted.

Being on the election committee used to be a good job. Anyone who wasn't running for a position would help run the election and it was conducted in a friendly, courteous and chivalrous manner. But now it's really hostile and any appearance of support to one side or another will get attacked by the opposition. So I would like to concur with Minai: it's a bad job.
Then again, they're going to have some trouble finding someone to do the job, seeing the bad press it has. So if you really want to do it then you can probably get the job pretty easily.
