It is if u wanna spend quite a bit of ur money and public money on it, it doesnt require a uni degree, cause either u got talent or u dont, u aint gonna learn it

i'm assuming you've confused arts with performing arts here

well i don't see why i should fund an anime society... in any way.
I'm just trying to lash out because a few people in this thread have claimed that vsu is for anti-social people, whereas there's just as good an argument that usu is supported by small lonely groups of geeks who can't get out and make friends in the real world.

Can we stop the degree bashing now?

And on a tangent, an anime society really wouldn't cost that much to run, since a lot of it's unlicensed and hence legally available for free off the internet, so all you really need is a free, dark room and a projector...

not so much accusing the stance as being anti-social
but demonstrating a contempt for university culture (and still expecting to get a degree).

If there were proper societies like in the States then I would support the USU, but alas there isnt.
Additionally USU can be seen to be dictatory and communist

can all you pro-vsu posters just admit that you hate culture and are selfish fucks?
If you think that sufficiently summarises the VSU position, you're not very informed.

First question.
Why do some of you have the audacity to say that people should be paying for services they won't necessarily use, purely to keep them running for the greater benefit of other people?
You use it, you pay for it. If so many people feel strongly about the services the union provides, then THEY can pay for it.
My mother who is doing her masters through USYD has to pay the fee, and why should she? She doesn't use any of the services provided, infact she only has to go to USYD twice a year for face to face lectures... And yet, people here still believe other people should pay for something PURELY BECAUSE IT BENEFITS OTHER PEOPLE.

I don't mind if people support VSU for the right reasons. Just not people who seem to love the fact that they get to keep their 500 (insert laughter at people who care ) bucks at the disadvantage of people who really need those services.
If you support Student Unions, pay for the bloody services. If you don't support them, or don't use them, why should you be paying $500-$600 a year to keep other people in the manner to which they would like to become accustomed?

They are destroying the 'left wing' student base in universities that were their enemies during their uni days.
OMG OH NOES, the righties plan for world domination starts with destroying the lefties at university. I've figured this out! It's one big conspiracy theory to ruin left wing students and their lives, all because at uni they used to be arch enemies. I'm glad that's settled.

Paying unions fees is not charity. Its adding to the university community.

Its making the university perhaps 'a better place'...this is not exactly 'bare' charity.
A better place for whom? The people who use the services? WELL GOOD, the people who USE the services can PAY for the services.

Little 1st yr'ers that go to crappy uni's shouldnt have a view on VSU.
Omg, kekekekekek I got a UAI of 99.95 and I go to USYD, omgorz, BOW DOWN!

Yeah. They all look like worthwhile things for other people to pay for. Well done. "OMG but you're contributing to services for other people", "omg get a life".
Sure there are some worthwhile things in that list, but they're far out numbered by the worthless ones.

Because that removes the social/easeofuse element, where anyone in the society can go at lunchtime on whatever day they hold these things, pay $1-2 and get some entertainment while they eat.

but, shouldn't university culture be in control of those who are at the university?!
(50% of students or so want vsu).
vsu isn't a viable entity
it's not anything but a complete dismantling of unions

even if 50% of people want the union, only a miniscule amount will actually pay for it (not because they don't REALLY want it, but because 50% of students paying can't support a union. how does a union exist with only partial coverage?)

umm... cuz the union ONLY provides services to that 50%, essentially the power of the union at usyd AFTER VSU, could have the same comparative power as the union at une CURRENTLY (if member numbers drop to about the same as the student numbers of une currently)...
