spiritual guidance is free if u attend church. u dont pay to go to church. (u can however, put money in the tithes and offerings IF U WANT) spiritual guidance is free if u have friends who can encourage u along in ur christian walk. spiritual guidance is free if u read ur bible. (which costs anything from free to $100- but seeing as its something u use more than a pair of jeans its well worth the investment, tho mine didnt cost anywhere near that)Asquithian said:

the things they sell are tapes of past services or books written about topics which are usually covered in church anyway, u dont have to buy them. but seeing as the pastors make their living from the selling of their "resources" (and not a cent from their offerings) then i think it is fair for them to sell them. i bet if u wrote a book that was gonna b ur paycheck each week, u would sell it for MORE than their average of $17.
(heck, paris hiltons books about $30 and she sure doesnt need the money!)

You can get bibles for free from most churches i've been to... at hillsong do they make you pay $17 for some sorta 'special' bible? that's wrong.

Most of these nutters that I know (eg. mother dear) have much more than one bible. It becomes a sort of hobby to collect lots of preety, shiny bibles. My personal fav. is 'the aussie bible'. Who comes up with this stuff?Not-That-Bright said:

Good point...the foundation of these things is ignorance, and that does seem to bring them a degree of happiness. These manipulators should be praised as fathers of illusion that distibute joy in their happy barns... for a tiiiny fee.

And this Hillsong business, anyone can be a minister. My dad is a minister, he wrote in and he got a certificate. So he should set up a bodgy 'church' and make some money.

somewhat surprisingly, i agree with most of what asqy has said in this thread. well said chap 
IMHO, what Hillsong church is *trying* to do is good, but they're going about it the wrong way... promoting a shallow interpretation of biblical teaching... in hopes of 'selling' it to the masses, and converting thousands. but converting thousands from WHAT, i have to ask. From 'secular' materialism and selfishness to 'blessed' materialism and selfishness?? phh!
with hillsong, it seems to be all about being 'blessed' in the most superficial way, how they associate being spiritually blessed with earthly material gain is beyond me. (and even if they don't mean to leave that impression, it's very apparant)
i find it disturbing the amount of influence that Brian and Bobbie Houston have. it's also disturbing that they sell their "resources" in the church foyer, not to mention the Gloria Jean's coffee cart, which is conveniently placed there. (isn't the founder of Gloria Jean's a Hillsong member??) Free refreshments after the service? Of course not! (a certain Biblical story comes to mind, when Jesus knocked over the tables of the merchants in the temple.
(and what did they sell? resources, of course! mainly live animals, for sacrifice on the temple's altar.)
Every other church i've been to (and i've been to quite a few), refreshments are FREE, there's no SHOP in the foyer and there's hardly any pressure to give money. plus, the people are friendly.
i went to the Hillsong church DVD recording in 2003, mostly it was enjoyable and the music was good, but felt out-of-place (mainly because i didn't raise my hands and echo 'amen' + all that sorta stuff, also because i hadn't dressed up enough for the occasion) and sadly, i noticed that the hillsong 'clone' concept did seem to have some grounds... for example, there were quite a few up-and-coming Darlene 'clones' up front during the worship service, looking as blonde, slim and well-dressed as ever.
also, it's pretty safe to say that, a majority of the time, Hillsong Church lives by the Psalms - (note: psalms, in themselves, are good) - but you don't often see the leaders paying much attention to the rest of the Bible. Psalms is a highly subjective (i.e emotional) book, which explains the Hillsong (and generally contemporary) worship style.
Having said that, we all get a bit misguided in our priorities from time to time,
i just hope that one day pretty-boy brian and blonde-beauty bobbie snap out of it, and realise that not everyone can realistically have the materially 'blessed' life that they've granted themselves, under the guise of it being "God's Will".

Oh yeah Brian looks like a sleazy used car salesman....
the fundamental teachings of most religions are based on what is perceived to be "good", our definition of good has come out of these models of morality.
however the distortion and exploitation of these has been shown time and time again over the course of history. fundamentalists of any religion can not be taken credibly. and undoubtedly there has been a backlash towards religion directed especially at christianity.
right wing and conservatism does not necessarily equate religion, most policies are influenced by religion though not all. in the same breath our law system has been influenced by religion though not entirely.
in terms of hillsong and the aog i do not condone commercialism of religion because it loses its basic principles, principles that should be enforced through everyday actions of charity and goodness over evangelicism and consumerism.
but i'm catholic (the most despised religion i believe) and i'm not ashamed of it and the actions of past catholics and churches such as the aforementioned are not true projections of who i am just because i follow the same god or in a denomination of the same religious umbrella.

I despise (though this is not the right word) the catholic church to a roughly equivalent degree to all other religion.
I despise some members of various churches less and even respect some. I despise some relgious teachings less so than others, I even respect some religious teaching.
The thing that is being missed is that the majority of people who reject (in this case) christianity do so because they differ fundamentally with the beliefs enshrined in christianity and/or the black and white cut and dried nature with which it is delivered.

Who dispises radicals on either side of the political spectrum?
I do however worry when people complain that religious conservatives are imposing their will on people through elections, whenever you vote... you're imposing your will on someone else, they have the same right to vote as anyone else.
