Kyle and Jackie O radio stunt backfires

'Appalling': Kyle Sandilands kept up the questioning after the girl said she had been raped.

The NSW Department of Community Services is investigating a commercial radio stunt this morning, which ended in a 14-year-old girl admitting she had been raped.

The incident occurred on 2DayFM's Kyle and Jackie O show, when a mother rang in to get her daughter to take part in a lie detector test about her experiences with sex and drugs.

After initially sounding uncomfortable with the questioning, the girl started crying and said she had been raped when she was 12.

Then Kyle Sandilands replied: "Right ... is that the only experience you've had?"

The girl's mother then said she had known about the rape. Jackie O then cut off the segment, saying the station had not known about the rape, and offered free counselling to the family.

Community Services Minister Linda Burney says she is disgusted, and has taken a personal interest in the case.

"The Department of Community Services is in touch with the radio station and the producers, and I have to say that they are cooperating fully with our enquiries, particularly in terms of being able to contact the family and in particular this 14-year-old girl," Ms Burney said.

NSW Rape Crisis Centre manager Karen Willis says the incident was managed appallingly by radio host Sandilands.

"Firstly he's ignoring that there's been a crime, but then calling it a sexual experience and then going 'oh have you had any others?'," Ms Willis said.

"Goodness gracious it's a terrible crime, it's actually the second worst crime that you can commit next to murder, and to equate that with something that should be in the 'fun, safety, pleasure' type category, and to be talking about those issues with a 14-year-old."

2DayFM general manager Jenny Parkes issued a statement saying: "All due care and consideration was given to the family and clearly we didn't know anything about the incident.

"The moment we became aware of it was live on air and we shut it down as soon as we possibly could.

"As is only appropriate, we are offering all the assistance we can to the family, including counselling, in what is of course an extraordinarily difficult situation."

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) says it is not yet investigating the segment, and upset listeners should contact Austereo directly to complain.

The Chasers were pulled off air for a sketch about children with cancer. This is much more direct and horrific, the only difference being that one channel has a media conglomerate behind it and the other doesn't.

Where I'm going with this:
1) That interview broke some major social boundaries, even by my standards.
2) I really don't like the show and I'd like it pulled regardless.
3) Despite the enormity of the act, the show will not be pulled because the station has the backing of Austereo has some major corporations behind it, so tomorrow morning you can bank that the Daily Telegraph will surround its watered down opinion piece way back on page 44 with football updates to distract the bogan public from caring.

Boo hoo. Lots of things offend my delicate sensibilities too. Unless you're a wowser, this is what you generally do when something offends you: Walk away. Ignore it. Oh no it offended me, who gives a shit.

Basically what happened was

Mum was ranting about how daughter went to bed at 9 and undercover cops brought her home at 2:30 am and the mother KNOWS FOR A FACT the daughter smokes marijuana etc

So anyway, they hook her up to the device and the mother asks if she has skipped school, daughter says no. Comes back as a lie, so they get into a fight about whether she has been skipping school, and she admits to faking sick days.

That's all good, then the mum asks if the daughter has ever had sex. And the daughter is like, "I already told you about that, this isn't funny" and then says "OH OK I WAS RAPED, OK, WHEN I WAS 12" and everyone goes silent and then Kyle is like "Right ... so is that your only experience" or something along those lines.

They then ask the mum if she knew and she was like "oh lol yeah but I only found out a few months ago" and the Kyle and Jackie O are like "um ... this yeah we're going to abort this now, we are so sorry we had no idea you'd been through this." and then offered the mum and daughter counseling, and the whole time jackie o is just like "oh god i am so sorry we had no idea" and then they go to the mum "um you really should have disclosed something like this before we started, because we'd have never brought her on here" and the mum is like "lol yeah i guess"

So other than the retard statement by Kyle, which was probably a "lol wtf do i say" mechanism kicking in, they were both blind sided by this.

It's questionable that they were asking a 14 year old about her sex life, but other than that I don't really see what they did wrong.

The mother is the one that needs to get roped up imo
