Ok so hypothetically speaking. If you have somebody ranked 1st in a subject (lets say legal) with an internal of 72, and 2nd place is 68 and 2nd place internal gets 80 raw in the HSC whilst 1st place internal gets 72 raw in the HSC, what would happen? Would 1st steal that mark? Would they both get that mark?

from my understanding if you're 1st in internals, you get the average of the mark of the person who got 1st externals + your externals mark ??

1st place would get 72 as their exam mark, 80 as their internal mark, and overall 76.
2nd place would get 80 as their exam mark, 72 for their internal mark, and overall 76.

This is assuming that 80 and 72 are the two highest marks on the HSC exam in the school of course. Your internal mark doesn't actually have anything to do with the mark you have before the HSC, those are just used to determine your rank. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that's how it works.

people have also alluded to the 'spread' of marks when its all moderated, depending on how close in mark you are to first, to last, to the average and then the people ranked either side of you. idk what this means tho bc it never seems to be explained more than that and then they just go into the explanation thats given above ?? is anyone able to explain that? or has it got nothing to do with it really

I don't know how exactly it works but this thread kind of explains it :)https://boredofstudies.org/threads/ranks-and-the-gaps-in-between.385351/
